We had a great event at the San Diego Air & Space Museum last night - the International Aerospace Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Amongst this year's inductees were some real aviation legends - Bob Hoover, Patty Wagstaff, Fran Bera, and Gene Cernan. Gene was on great form as ever, giving a rousing speech, having photos with people, autographing - a great guy. It came at the end of a busy day for the education department, as we'd been presenting all day at a Sally Ride Science festival just up the road, featuring astronaut Wendy Lawrence. |

The space-themed food centerpieces (seen here in front of the real Apollo 9 CM) were very appropriate! Each inductee unveiled a new portait of themselves which will hang in the Hall of Fame, and I thought Cernan's was particularly well-done. |

I agree; great portrait! Can I place my order now? However, I wanted to point out what I beleive to be a bit of artistic license. As discussed in a recent thread I believe the earth should be higher in the lunar sky, although I understand the reason for painting it lower. No criticism intended; just an observation. |

Indeed, I think it is a bit of artistic license, just to show the famous whole earth image taken on his mission at a different moment - that, the Gemini in front of his spacesuit etc., represent moments in his overall career, not one image. Otherwise he's driving the lunar rover while watching the LM ascend from the lunar surface without him - not something an astronaut would want to see! |

In prior years, artist-signed prints have sometimes been made available of the induction paintings. Let me know if you'd like me to inquire about this with the induction organizers and I'd be happy to. I have just posted some other info. about Cernan and Wagstaff signed books from the event here. |
