When Foxes Guard the Hen House: An Inside Look at the Potential for Nuclear Annihilation in the Weaponization of Space by Edgar Mitchell (edited by Carol Mersch) A study conducted by Apollo 14 astronaut and astrophysicist Dr. Edgar Mitchell. In his words:"Reagan's 'Star Wars' initiative to put orbiting weapons into space aroused the ire of many scientists, who realized, as did I, that weapons in space put a hair trigger on war, and more likely, a nuclear exchange. Such an orbiting device would virtually invite instant attack. Many scientists wrote letters and signed proclamations, but Reagan persisted. "Carol Rosin worked as an assistant to Wernher von Braun, and before he died, he sent her to me to work on these issues. We did the research, and I wrote the first draft. Thirty-four publishers refused to publish it or even seriously consider it. Such was the power of the White House, which did not want it published. "I was subject to harassment, tapped phones, and more, much like we experience with government Special Access Programs today." - Paperback: 360 pages

I have some serious doubts about this book.First, by the time von Braun died in 1977, the US ABM project was terminated and the ABM treaty was signed in 1972. The ABM system was not really an issue. I don’t see why von Braun in a civilian agency would have commissioned a study on an ABM system other than the launch requirements and that would most likely be done by a military agency like DARPA or JASON. Second, the book opens with a quote from JFK’s “Moon speech” at Rice University in 1962 but attributes the quote to Edgar Mitchell in 1987. |

If von Braun was concerned with the weaponization of space, he wasn't always — other than the obvious (V-2), his central campaign for the peaceful and scientific exploration of space as spelled out in a series of articles for Collier's magazine had at its core a crewed space station that would "serve as reconnaissance platform and orbiting battle station for achieving 'space superiority' over the USSR. One its roles could be the launching of nuclear missiles."Michael Neufeld outlines "Wernher von Braun's campaign for a nuclear-armed space station" in this paper from 2006. | |
