I watched it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Interested to see some of the large-format footage shot during the work-up to the Apollo 8 recovery ended up in the film, but that's not a huge demerit. It's really beautifully put together and there's some stuff in it I had never seen or heard before. Really recommend it. |

I recently came across a few videos on YouTube of Millennial and Gen Z-age "reactors" watching "Apollo 13" for the first time. It was fascinating to watch their reactions because not only did they associate the actors with movies that came out after the 1995 film, but they were mostly completely unaware of the real mission. When "Apollo 13" came out and for about a decade after, it seemed like more people knew the details of the 1970 "successful failure" than they knew what happened on Apollo 11. I write all of this to say that the overall feeling I had when watching "Apollo 13: Survival" was that it was an attempt to recreate "Apollo 13" using archival footage and interviews. And overall, I think that it worked, though the filmmakers took some interesting liberties using out-of-context audio and recreated visuals to achieve that effect. In the end, I think the documentary ends up being a mashup of "Apollo 11" and "Apollo 13," which is not a bad thing, but does suffer with regards to the latter and its focus on Jim Lovell and his family. Jack Swigert and Fred Haise (the latter in particular) come off as secondary characters in "Survival." I do wonder what someone who has never seen the 1995 movie and is not versed in the actual mission would come away with after watching "Survival." All the major points are included, but some are passing mentions (like Haise falling ill) and some are only partially addressed (like the reason for the shallowing of the trajectory on the way back to Earth). Regardless of that, I hope "Survival" reaches that audience and others to keep Apollo 13 from receding from our collective memories. |

From Concord Aerospace (via Facebook): We are profoundly proud and grateful to have been involved in the creation of the Apollo 13: Survival documentary, Netflix's latest special that recounts one of history's most remarkable tales of human ingenuity and survival. It is a true honor for Concord Aerospace to play a role in this unique and historic production, capturing the spirit of exploration, resilience, and perseverance that defined the Apollo missions. Our contributions included designing and manufacturing fully operable components of the Apollo Command and Lunar module interior instrument panels, tailored specifically for the documentary's requirements. This work was essential in bringing these iconic modules to life for a new generation of viewers. It is a privilege to witness this extraordinary story being retold with such power and impact, and to be part of that journey. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the INSIGHT production team for their collaboration. Special thanks to Director Peter Middleton for his vision and leadership, and to Hugh Davies and Selina Kay and to NETFLIX team for their unwavering support. And a special shout out goes to Producer Clive Patterson, who was with us here in Orlando during production, ensuring that the sets were built to the highest standards of accuracy. This project truly exemplified collective effort and passion, and we are proud to share our love for space exploration while inspiring others with the incredible achievements of the Apollo program. | |
