NASA Launches Beta Site; On-Demand Streaming, App Update Coming Soon

NASA is elevating its digital platforms for the benefit of all by revamping its flagship and science websites, adding its first on-demand streaming service, and upgrading the NASA app. With these changes, everyone will have access to a new world of content from the space agency.

Users can access the early, in-progress preview of the beta website now and are encouraged to visit and submit feedback at:

https://beta.nasa.gov/

"Our vision is to inspire humanity through a unified, world-class NASA web experience," said Jeff Seaton, chief information officer at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "NASA's legacy footprint presents an opportunity to dramatically improve the user experience for the public we serve. Modernizing our main websites from a technology standpoint and streamlining how the public engages with our content online are critical first steps in making our agency's information more accessible, discoverable, and secure."

This new web experience will serve as an ever-expanding yet consolidated homebase for information about the agency's missions and research, climate data, Artemis updates, and more. The updated nasa.gov and science.nasa.gov websites will provide a connected, topic-driven experience, with a common search engine, integrated navigation, and optimized publishing capabilities in a modernized and secure set of web tools.

NASA will continue to update and improve the beta site on a rolling-basis as it receives feedback from website visitors. Once fully launched, the online content from a selection of popular agency websites will be included within this new experience to ensure easier, integrated access to NASA information currently found across the agency's many websites.

Later this year, NASA also will launch its new streaming platform, NASA+., and upgrade the NASA app. Through the ad-free, no cost, and family-friendly streaming service, users will gain access to the agency's Emmy Award-winning live coverage and views into NASA's missions through collections of original video series, including a handful of new series launching with the streaming service.

"We're putting space on demand and at your fingertips with NASA's new streaming platform," said Marc Etkind, associate administrator, Office of Communications, NASA Headquarters. "Transforming our digital presence will help us better tell the stories of how NASA explores the unknown in air and space, inspires through discovery, and innovates for the benefit of humanity."

NASA+ will be available on most major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices; streaming media players such as, Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV; and on the web across desktop and mobile devices.

Following the launch of all new digital platforms, NASA will continue to connect additional agency websites and multimedia libraries into this new experience to continually streamline all the information shared across its centers, missions, and programs. With an enhanced digital presence, NASA will share science, research, exploration, and innovation with the world through cohesive platforms.

"From exoplanet research to better understanding Earth's climate and the influence of the Sun on our planet along with exploration of the solar system, our new science and flagship websites, as well as forthcoming NASA+ videos, showcases our discovery programs in an interdisciplinary and crosscutting way, ultimately building stronger connections with our visitors and viewers," said Nicky Fox, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters.

NASA Publishes Beta Flagship, Science Websites as Improvements Continue

NASA has switched its primary World Wide Web addresses to a beta version of the new NASA.gov and science.nasa.gov websites, continuing the long-term development and consolidation of its public web presence. The new sites will offer visitors an improved, intuitive web design and elevated user experience.

The ongoing work on the agency's upgraded website is the first step to a broad new digital experience from NASA, which will include a new on-demand streaming service called NASA + and an updated NASA app. This enhanced digital presence will allow the space agency to share science, research, exploration, and innovation with the world through cohesive platforms, encouraging users to spend more time experiencing the universe through the eyes of NASA.

This new site will be the foundation of a one-stop-shop for the agency's missions and research, climate data, Artemis updates and more. The new, topic-driven experience will ensure easier, integrated access to NASA information currently found across the agency's many websites.

Design features of the new site include enlarged image formats and NASA's collection of imagery covering all agency research and programs. NASA will continue to update and improve the site on a rolling-basis as it receives feedback from website visitors.

This is the eighth significant update for NASA's website, which first launched in 1993. The site won the Webby Award for best government website four times, and received the People's Voice, voted on by the public 10 times.

The agency will continue to connect NASA websites and multimedia libraries into this new digital experience to further streamline the information shared across its centers, missions, and programs.

NASA Launches its First On-Demand Streaming Service, Updated App

NASA's new on-demand streaming service and upgraded app are now available, ushering in a new world of original content from the space agency for the benefit of all. These new digital platforms are the landing place of original video series, live launch coverage, kids' content, Spanish-language programming, and the latest news as NASA continues to improve life on Earth through innovation, exploration, and discovery.

The new on-demand streaming service is available to download on most major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices, as well as streaming media players Roku and Apple TV. Users also may stream online.

"NASA is a leader in the federal government for creating inspirational content that meets people where they are," said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy. "I am excited we have created a powerful trifecta with the recently revamped NASA website, the launch of NASA+, and the updated NASA App that showcases the many benefits our data can have for all humanity."

These platforms are part of an effort to ensure agency content is more accessible, discoverable, and secure for the public. Earlier this year, NASA launched its revamped nasa.gov and science.nasa.gov websites, creating a new homebase for research, climate data, Artemis information, and more.

"NASA's new streaming platform and app are where the world can join us as we explore the unknown," said Marc Etkind, associate administrator, Office of Communications, NASA Headquarters. NASA Embraces Streaming Service to Reach, Inspire Artemis Generation

As part of its ongoing web and television modernization efforts, NASA is shifting its digital focus to its on-demand streaming service, NASA+, which has already gained four times more viewership than the agency's traditional cable channel. To streamline how it brings the latest aeronautics, human spaceflight, science, and technology news to the universe, the agency also is preparing to phase out NASA Television, its over-the-air broadcast, in late August.

Through NASA+, the agency is continuing its decades long tradition of sharing live events, original content, and the latest news while NASA works to improve life on Earth through innovation, exploration, and discovery for the benefit of all.

The free, on-demand streaming service is available to download without a subscription on most major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices, as well as streaming media players like Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV. Users also may stream online here.

"In a universe where the way we consume information is rapidly changing, NASA+ is helping us inspire and connect with our current generation of explorers: the Artemis Generation," said Marc Etkind, associate administrator, Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Through NASA+, we are enhancing the user experience for our audiences in a way that reflects our commitment to reaching new heights, both in space exploration and in media."

Get Ready to Explore: New NASA+ Content Coming Soon

NASA+ is set to release new content, including a lineup of new documentaries and behind-the-scenes footage of NASA missions and live events, including:

  • "Planetary Defenders"– NASA's documentary that delves into the high-stakes world of asteroid detection and planetary defense all for the benefit of humanity.
  • "Our Alien Earth" – This series follows the field work taking place in extreme environments over the world by NASA scientists; work that directly informs NASA missions to discover extraterrestrial life in the universe.
  • "An Ocean in Bloom" – A documentary about a NASA satellite that sheds light on a coastal Floridian community's battle with souring ocean waters that threaten the town's fishing industries.
In addition, audiences can prepare to see their fan favorites return for more adventures in new series episodes, including:
  • "Other Worlds" Episode 3 – A new addition to NASA's award-winning series that follows scientists behind the scenes as they uncover new images from the agency's James Webb Space Telescope.
  • "The Color of Space" Episode 3 – Follow the personal stories of current and former Black astronauts, each selected to become part of NASA's astronaut corps and train for space missions.
  • "Space Out" Season 2 – Turn on, tune in, and space out to relaxing music and stunning ultra-high-definition visuals of our cosmic neighborhood.
The streaming platform also includes live event coverage, where people everywhere can watch in real-time as the agency launches science experiments and astronauts to space, and ultimately, the first woman and person of color to the Moon under the Artemis campaign.

The transition from cable TV to streaming is part of a larger effort to ensure NASA's content is more accessible, discoverable, and secure for the public. Last year, in addition to NASA+, the agency launched its revamped nasa.gov and science.nasa.gov websites, creating a new homebase for research, climate data, Artemis information, and more.

Per NASA:
Join us at 11 p.m. EDT sharp on all NASA channels as we come full circle with our coverage for a viewing of the iconic moment Neil Armstrong became the first astronaut to walk on the surface of the Moon. We will take one final step on broadcast with a special 3-minute showing before our next giant leap toward online streaming. The clip will end with a slate guiding viewers to NASA+, which will remain on air until NASA TV officially ends on Monday, Sept. 30.

Moving forward, you may find our live events and original content on demand only via NASA+. We are looking forward to continuing our decades-long tradition of sharing NASA content as we work to improve life on Earth through innovation, exploration, and inspiration.

It is no longer a broadcast or cable channel, but an app you can access through smart TVs or through Roku, Hulu, DirectTV, DISH Network, Google Fiber, Amazon Fire TV or Apple TV.

Would that be American Smart TVs only? (I'm just checking. I have no grounds for complaining if the US space agency limits its streaming to US citizens!)

To my knowledge, it is international. If by no way else, NASA+ is still on YouTube and streamed through the YouTube app.

Thanks! But not until 8th November apparently. (ON EDIT: I think that was Nov. 2023, so I'll check current availability and content.)

As I understand it, NASA+ is an app (just like Paramount+ or Apple TV+) used to access NASA's programming. The content that is on NASA+ is also on YouTube on the various NASA accounts.

The easiest way to watch NASA+ online is through NASA's website.

Just as a reference point, I uploaded the app on FireTV and it works just fine. It was nice to be able to watch what I wanted rather than what was being broadcasted.

I watched an Apollo 17 documentary.

I have enjoyed the new format. My only non-positive is the inability to record live events for a quick review post completion. The example is the Starliner landing video took a day or so to post.

I miss not being able to see NASA TV while channel surfing. Many years ago, I made the request to our local cable tv provider to add NASA TV to its' channel lineup.

All times are CT (US)
