With "Friendship 7" now undergoing the production process, I'm pleased to announce that the fourth book in the Mercury series, "Aurora 7: The Mercury Space Flight of M. Scott Carpenter," has now been completed in manuscript form and has gone out for copyediting. All being well, it should be released around September/October. I will shortly begin work on the books on the two final Mercury orbital missions to complete the six-book set. And no - I will not then be tackling each of the Gemini missions. |

No, no chance. I always wanted to write books on the six Mercury flights, and even though I love the Gemini program, I do want to spend at least some of my life away from my keyboard. Besides, I am still busy writing the Interkosmos book with Bert Vis and the NASA Group 5 and 7 book with David Shayler as well as the books on the Sigma 7 and Faith 7 missions. After that, I think I need a long break. |

Well, being the Gemini program, maybe it will take TWO authors to tackle the missions |

Colin, looking forward to these, and you deserve a long break after writing all of these books. Take two weeks, heck take three weeks off.

Colin is saying this because he's next writing a 135-volume series on each of the shuttle missions. And that includes finding something different to write about STS-94 than STS-83. |

No, he's planning a series with one book for each satellite ever launched (including those lost prior to reaching orbit).

I assume that is in addition to the books on each individual astronaut selected.

Way ahead of you guys: all of the above (chimp biographies, finalists) was comprehensively covered in "Animals in Space: From Research Rockets to the Space Shuttle," co-written with Chris Dubbs. |

Aurora 7: The Mercury Spaceflight of M. Scott Carpenter by Colin Burgess Following up on Colin Burgess's other books on the Mercury manned missions, this continues the complete history of NASA's nascent spaceflight program. Each Mercury flight forms a key part of the organization's early years. The story of Aurora 7 is retold here using in-depth research that fully contextualizes the project and reveals new aspects of the early days of space exploration. After successfully launching suborbital Mercury missions as well as the first orbital spaceflight in Friendship 7, NASA continued with Aurora 7, flown by Malcolm Scott Carpenter, which landed 260 miles from the recovery vessel, the USS Intrepid, after a series of technical issues. This would be Carpenter's only spaceflight, yet the three orbital missions did manage to complete several useful experiments. - ISBN 978-3-319-20438-3

Unless there's a production hitch, and based on previous experience with the Mercury books, I would expect copies to be available from about July, rather than October. |

So when are you going to write the books about Delta 7 and Freedom 7 II (even though the latter was included in Shepard's book)?

Details of Deke's assignment to MA-7 and his training for Delta 7, and then the devastating decision to drop him from the mission are all included in the Aurora 7 book.As you mention, I explored the story behind Shepard and a possible second Mercury flight aboard the Freedom 7 II spacecraft in my earlier "Freedom 7" book, and I don't believe there is much more to the story than this. |

The page proofs for this book have now been returned to the publication production team for some editing amendments. Once they have been attended to, and the editor and I give the all-clear, it will go for printing. At this stage, I would anticipate a release next month (August).Meanwhile, work continues on "Sigma 7." |

Looking forward to reading this, as Cmdr. Carpenter is the only one of the Mercury 7 that I have met, and thoroughly enjoyed his memoir For Spacious Skies. Hopefully his daughter Kris contributed some memories on her father's flight. |

Thanks for letting me know, Eddie. I contacted Springer New York and they told me there had indeed been a technical delay at their end, but they are still anticipating a late September release of the book. They said that an Amazon release should happen soon after. |
