Space Exploration and Humanity: A Historical Encyclopedia by American Astronautical Society, Stephen Johnson (Editor) List Price: $185.00 - Hardcover: 616 pages
- Publisher: ABC-CLIO (September 16, 2008)
- Language: English
- ISBN-10: 1851095144

A bit puzzled by this title not only because of its price but also because it's the second volume of a (ongoing?) serie(s)... |

This thing has been in the works for years (at least five, possibly many more). I contributed a few essays to it, although the terms are pretty bad (they pay almost nothing at all). But I turned down more significant involvement because I was never convinced that it would ever get published. Maybe it will, but I still would not be surprised if it did not. |

This will be published as a two-volume set (not the second in a series) scheduled for Sep. 2008. Here is the ABC-CLIO product info website. |

ABC-CLIO has acquired Greenwood Press which is still planning to come out with another space encyclopedia (see this thread.) The ABC-CLIO encyclopedia will concentrate on the following (info kindly provided by Stephen Johnson). Here's an excerpt from his email: Our project covers the entire waterfront, which includes social issues, politics, economics, culture, military, commercial applications, technology & engineering, Earth science, and astrophysics, as well as their topics of human flight and planetary probes (non-Earth observation/probes). The majority of our project is written by the community of space historians, supplemented by scientific and engineering experts in their fields and others as needed to cover topics where we could not find "the" experts. All articles were reviewed by professional space historians (me at a minimum in some cases, but many by two or more). Finally, ours includes with each article the best 3-4 sources to find out more about the history of the topic. I believe that is unique to our project. Our encyclopedia will be published next year (2010). All articles are now (as of mid-September 2009) complete, and I am now working on the miscellaneous stuff like glossary, acronym list, etc. These will be done within a month and the manuscript sent to ABC-CLIO for production. |

I contributed an article and indeed the fee was negligible, but on the other hand I'll receive a copy of the two-volume product. |

Having written the entry on "Chesley Bonestell" for this encyclopedia something like five years ago, I was getting to be about as pessimistic on its ever being published as was Dwayne! But it has indeed finally been released, and I received my two-volume set today. |

I was contracted to write an article way back in July 2003. |

I wrote the entries on Gemini and Skylab, also way back about 2003 or 04. It finally came out and I got my free copy. Unfortunately, it needed more proofing than it evidently got — it has a lot of factual errors in the sections I perused in the manned spaceflight sections. |
