Totally agree with you about David Bakers "Manned Spaceflight". CDR Dave Scott recommends it very highly, according to the ALSJ. Collects an astonishing amount of information between two massive covers - it would be the book I would take to a desert island, if I could choose only one! (Very surprised it wasn't on the Boggs list.)

Our top 20 list was voted in by website visitors and many from collectSPACE participated.

We all have our personal favorites of course!

FYI, Baker's History finished 22nd in the ranking, just below the Saturn V News Reference.

My brother gave me a copy of Baker's huge book for Christmas when I was 13. It was on the "bargain books" table at the local Waldenbooks. For me, it was the first book that really blew the whole scope of the space program open for me and told me so many little behind-the-scenes stories (and showed me a lot of cool pictures I'd never seen before). Most of my education about the space program came from that book.

I still have my copy -- somewhat worse for wear, but still treasured, still one of the first books I go for if I need to answer a question.

Baker's opus has to be one of the most-cited reference books in the field... It's considered pretty much the definitive layperson's history of human spaceflight before the Shuttle era. I suspect it didn't quite make the "Holy Grails" list because it's not scarce enough... Just a couple of years ago, I picked up a pristine copy for about US $160.

Definitely a must-have.

The Holy Grail of manned spaceflight books has to be a full set of the booklets issued by the USIS in London. These were entitled 'Manned Spaceflight' and ran from 1968 to 1975 with an update to the 1975 edition issued in 1977.

I know of only two full sets in the UK and of only a single copy of the 1975 edition in the USA.
