Superb article in Spaceflight July 2008 by Joel Powell with unique photos "Monkey's ill-fated voyage" on the subject of the only living creature ever launched onboard a Delta Rocket: macaca monkey "Bonny"... it flew onboard Delta Rocket 70 on 28 June 1969 for a longer orbital flight until 7 July 1969... |

I agree with you on that one!Asif's article is one of the most interesting I've read in Spaceflight magazine for a long time and he is certainly writing the best stuff on Soviet space history at the moment. Dom |

p344: What's the actual name of the Soviet person who gave a speech at BIS Headquarters in September 1961? First paragraph says "Tokayev" and the next one (and the footnotes) "Tokaty". Also, I'm not sure that 1987 was the 20th anniversary of the space age! (p349) And talking about the space age, why is it sometimes capitalized? (p349 first and third column). Chris. |

Chris that article appeared in the Vol 41 N°11 issue (November 1999) Just saw the article in BIS Spaceflight magazine October 2008 (pages 376-385) by Ken Kremer... astounding! Great to get a 10 pages overview of the mission and superb mosaic photos by UMSF forum members. Also good article by Dwayne Day on the future 12-wheeled lunar truck! |

For those interested, Asif Siddiqi kindly provided the answer to my query: "This is a little bit of a complicated issue. This person was born with the name Grigoriy Aleksandrovich Tokaty. His was a rather unusual name in the USSR (Tokaty was born in the north Caucasus). When he was older he 'Russianized' his last name to 'Tokayev' (or in the Library of Congress system: Tokaev). After he defected to the West, he used both 'Tokaty' and 'Tokaev' as well as the hyphenated 'Tokaty-Tokaev.' If you look at his list of publications, the author's name is different in different sources. This was the source of the confusion on my article. I hope that answers your question." quote: Also, I'm not sure that 1987 was the 20th anniversary of the space age!
That's a typo!Chris. |

BIS Spaceflight magazine December 2008 has an excellent 9-pages article by Robert April: "Where next Columbus? NASA's Future Planetary Exploration Missions".Overview with proposed timeline for lunar and Mars missions, outer planet missions and missions of opportunity. Good photos of the Mars Science Laboratory "Scarecrow" vehicle, the next Mars rover. |

To follow up Philip's post...I'm in the States (Denver), and I'm wondering if there are currently distribution issues with UK- or Europe-based publications. The January issue of "BBC Sky at Night" only recently arrived on shelves here, while the local retailer of "Spaceflight" still does not have the January issue. Prior to this year, these magazines typically arrived here in the second or third week of the cover month.I've heard that some overseas distributors are cutting back on freight to North America, or dropping titles entirely. Does anyone have more specific info on this? Thanks! Kevin |

If you continue to have problems with delivery then please let me know and I will look into it, and mention it at our next committee meeting. I am a member of the BIS Membership Committee. Phil, I have a picture of Charlie Duke holding that issue of Spaceflight with your MER front cover. My article about Charlie has been accepted for inclusion in Spaceflight and should in sometime before August. That's how far ahead were thinking these days. Cheers Andy |

I did not receive the March issue here in the Netherlands, although that was corrected by the BIS within a few days after I asked them about it.I haven't yet received my April subscription issue, so judging from other reactions here that could be normal. I did receive the author's copies of the April issue, but these usually arrive before my subscription issue. Ed |

Just received the April 2009 issue this afternoon, featuring the article by ed Hengeveld and JL Pickering on preserving historic photos. Pity these guys focused on manned spaceflight as it's even more difficult to find good photos of unmanned spacecraft during ATLO (Assembly Test & Launch Operations). |
