I am starting a club in the Washington, DC / northern Virginia / Maryland area for autograph collectors who take the hobby seriously. We'll appreciate a really great piece of Hollywood history, but be even more interested in items having to do with space, literature, inventions, world leaders, military history, etc.

We'll meet every couple of months to show some of our best items to an appreciative audience, tell stories of triumphs (like great “in-persons” or lucky deals) and tragedies (like ALMOST great “in-persons” or lucky deals that turned out to be not so genuine), and discuss autograph collecting in general. There might be some trading and selling, if we think that would be a good idea. Please let me know if there are other things you would like to include in our meetings.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7:15 p.m. an autograph dealer named Edward Bomsey will be giving a talk on the hobby at Fairfax City Regional Library. I hope you can make it to that event. (The library is at 3915 Chain Bridge Rd, Fairfax, VA 22030 (703) 293-6227. Details of the Edward Bomsey talk are pasted below.)

But I have also signed up for the use of the meeting room on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. I don’t think we’ll need that much time, but I want to be sure we have time to talk about what we want out of the club.

I think that it would be fun to show something off each week according to a theme. So for this first meeting on Saturday, please bring a few of your favorite items that you’d like to show and talk about, but also the very first (or at least one of the first) items you got, along with the story of how you got into collecting.

Please let me know if you will or will not be able to attend. Please also forward this e-mail to any friend of yours whom you think would be interested in joining this club.

Hope to see you there!

Steven T. Smith

Just a reminder that our first meeting is tomorrow, Saturday the 17th, at the time and place described above. We've got a bunch of RSVPs already.

If you know an autograph collector friend in the DC area who might not read this, I'd appreciate it if you could let him or her know about it.

Thanks, and I hope to see you there.

Hey I had a great time at the DC area get-together! We stayed for two hours, and probably could have gone all day.!

Thanks, Steve, for pulling all of this together and I know we are all looking forward to the next one.

Best,
Dennis D.

Likewise, I had a great time as well. Thanks again for organizing this, Steve. This kick-off meeting was a total success. Did not have nearly enough one-on-one time to talk to everyone and to view everyone’s treasures. But, there’s always the next time…

This is my first posting as a new collectSpace member. As a relative newcomer to astronaut autograph collecting, I was pleased to see that a member took the time to organize a meeting for people in the local Washington DC area. Steve, you did a fantastic job in organizing and planning the agenda of the meeting. It was a pleasure to meet you, and Bill, Dennis, and Woody. It was great to see the items you all have collected over the years too. Although each of us have unique areas of interests, it was great to see that we all appreciate the hobby of collecting autographs for various personal and not monetary reasons. I look forward to our next get-together soon. Dennis K.

I'm very happy to read about how much the new club members enjoyed getting together on Saturday. It was my pleasure to organize it. I had just as much fun talking about the hobby as I thought I would, then there were the bonuses of learning new things about the space program AND getting to handle some truly museum-quality artifacts and autographs.

I thought it was great that after writing in my original post that we probably wouldn't actually meet for the whole time we had the meeting room reserved, we pretty much got kicked out by the next group setting up!

We ended up talking entirely about space collecting the whole time, and while I do want to bring collectors of other autographs in, I'd be happy with making space the emphasis.

To anyone who wasn't able to make it: our next meeting will be in about two months at the northern Virginia home of another member. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me.

Hello fellow collectors. While this is a club for autograph collectors in general, our first meeting consisted entirely of people who had heard about it on collectSPACE, and this meeting is being hosted at the home of a cS member who is going to be showing some of his great items. So I thought I'd post the details here.

The meeting will be on Saturday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or so) at a home in Herndon, northeast of Dulles Airport. If you'd like the name and address because you think you can attend, please e-mail me and I'll send you the address for you to put into Mapquest. If you are coming west and taking the Dulles Toll Road, you will need to bring $1.50 in change.

We will have a good agenda of things to talk about and show, but also plenty of time to chat about whatever. There will even be a light brunch. Your spouses or significant others are invited too.

Bring whatever you would like to show and possibly trade, but also bring your most unusual item. That is, the one that is unusual in your collection because it is so different from what else you collect.

One of the topics of conversation will be buying from and selling to dealers and auctioneers, so perhaps you could come prepared with some stories about positive and negative experiences you have had. Think of what you are glad that some dealers do, and annoyed that others do.

If you can't make it to this meeting, we hope to see you at the next one a couple of months later!

On a related note, on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:15, autograph dealer Ed Bomsey will be giving a talk about the hobby of autograph collecting at the Fairfax City library.

Sincerely,
Steven T. Smith

Hello Steve,
This is a great idea meeting other collectors and saying "Hello" to each other and comparing collections. I would have joined you but I live all the way in NYC....and that would be such a far ride. Maybe the next "Collectors Meeting" will be held near NYC...Oh well I hope everybody has a good time.
Good Luck

Hey, this get-together was even better than the last!!! Lots of dialog and trading, and the three hours just sped by! Several new folks showed up too. Thanks to Steve Smith for pulling this together, and many thanks to our hosts, Dennis and Carlene for their hospitality (not to mention getting to see Dennis' posterior-kickin' space and sports collections!).

This was a great event. What a pleasure to meet everyone. I relly look forward to the next meeting. The show and tell was fantastic. The duragible collection was very interesting. Also I was impressed with the multi signed moon piece along with Dennis' wall & sports collection. And of course Carlene's exorcist doll was was very unusual. Thanks so much Steve, Dennis and Carlene. Greats hosts and fantastic food.

Hello everyone, the next meeting of the DC-Area Autograph Collectors Club will be on Saturday, January 12 at 12:00 noon. The location will be in Annandale, VA- please e-mail me for the specific address if you would like to attend. There will be some food and beverages provided, but not a full lunch, so please have lunch beforehand.

The club is for autograph collectors in general, but about half the members heard about it through collectSPACE, so space program autographs are always emphasized.

The two main topics of discussion will be: showing any autograph acquisitions and telling of experiences you may have had since our last meeting; and pros and cons of different ways to buy autographs, especially from dealers. Are there policies or practices you approve of or find irksome? Have you had dealings with specific dealers that would cause you to recommend them to others or warn others away?

As always, please tell other collectors you know who might be able to attend about this meeting, and bring items you might want to trade or sell.

Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,
Steven T. Smith
