A restored portrait of Alan Shepard, the first American in space, was unveiled on Monday night (Nov. 18) at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, New Hampshire, where Shepard graduated as a member of the Class of 1940. "It is important to remember Alan Shepard today," said Mark Mastromarino at the unveiling ceremony. "He exemplified courage, patriotism and service — qualities we stand in need of in public life today."Mastromarino, who works as Pinkerton Academy's historian, added the restored portrait will be placed in a well-trafficked area in Pinkerton's Shepard Building in the hopes of reminding and inspiring current and future students to reach for the stars and be heroes themselves. The portrait, painted by New York artist Bruce Stevenson in 1962, was donated to Pinkerton Academy by the Shepard family. The painting had been hanging in an office in the Shepard Building but was in need of some upgrades and touch-ups, Mastromarino said. | |
