RIA Novosti, Russia's state-run news agency, reports that three tourists from Europe were detained at Baikonur trying to illegally enter the cosmodrome. "Three European citizens, detained while trying to get into the Baikonur Cosmodrome, were given administrative punishment by the 26th Garrison Military Court and ordered to leave the territory of the complex," said a source familiar with the situation.Baikonur has long attracted extreme tourists. Thus, in 2022, British citizen Benjamin Rich and Belarusian citizen Alina Zelupa were detained there. They made their way to launch pad No. 112, where the second flight copy of the Soviet Buran spacecraft is located. Sometimes such "excursions" end tragically. A month ago, two Frenchmen tried to get to the cosmodrome - one of them died from dehydration. The second was unable to help his comrade on his own, and when they managed to call rescuers, he was already dead. |

Doesn’t seem very clever — unless they weren't "tourists." |

There has been a rise in this kind of unauthorized tourism ever since the photos of the Buran space shuttles in their abandoned hangars went viral. The interest in those shots by such a large worldwide audience has inspired others to try to visit Baikonur and sneak into closed facilities rather than pay for the established tours. I can understand the allure. On my one trip, even though we were there on official terms, we couldn't resist the opportunity to sneak under a barbwire fence to reach a Buran that was sitting out in the open. That shuttle has since been moved to the Baikonur museum and restored. | |
