The organizers of tonight's unveiling wished to be able to offer a “Ohioans in Space” commemorative patch at the Statehouse Museum Gift Shop. I was delighted to take on the challenge. The three highlighted icons are Friendship 7 orbiting the Earth, the Eagle from Apollo 11 and the horses from Apollo 13. The launches (L-R) are the Saturn V for Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell. The Mercury Atlas for John Glenn and the space shuttle for Judy Resnik, John Glenn and the other Ohio astronauts. I added small stars for the other 19 astronauts from Ohio. Two smaller twinkling stars honor Charles Bassett and Donn Eisele. Finally I added an orbital element to the Moon to illustrate that Jim Lovell was a member of the first crew to do so 55 years ago. They are now available from the Statehouse gift shop. If you would like to purchase from the store, you may call them directly to place your order at (614) 728-9234 or email them at: museumshop@ohiostatehouse.org. |

Would like to see someone print posters of the mural. I will purchase one and another for in-law. Maybe the statehouse gift shop sells it in store and online. |

Bill Hinsch was signing prints of the painting at the Statehouse on Wednesday. It was not said if the prints (signed or unsigned) were available from the gift shop. |

collectSPACE Ohio capitol unveils painting of state's 'Mount Rushmore of astronauts'The first American to orbit Earth, the first human to step foot on the lunar surface, one of the first people to circle the moon and one of the first American women to fly into space have more in common than just flying on some of NASA's most historic missions — they also all hailed from the same home state. Ohio on Wednesday (Jan. 24) paid tribute to its citizens' achievements in space travel and exploration by unveiling a large-scale painting to adorn the rotunda of the capitol building in Columbus. "Ohioans in Space" by artist Bill Hinsch depicts astronauts John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, James Lovell and Judith Resnik, as well as Toledo-born Eugene Kranz, NASA's second flight director in Mission Control. |

I attended the panel discussion with the astronauts and went through the gift shop. I didn't see the patch that Tim designed on display. Some of the art related items being offered were a small velcro patch, postcards, and maybe a 14 inch size print of the painting. I'm not sure if this print was the same "poster" that the artist was signing later in the day or if there was a larger size for that event. |

I find the artwork a little strange with Armstrong's likeness being larger than the other featured astronauts. I imagine the reasoning is that his accomplishment makes him more important than the others, but to me, it's bothersome. |

I like the artwork; it doesn't bother me. Hey; a galaxy is even included at lower right, perhaps recognizing the role observational astronomy played before space flight. I'll bet Ohio-based astronomers and astrophysicists are happy.Regarding the patch; I just emailed the gift shop to place an order. As mentioned in an earlier comment, they do have a small velcro-type patch, square with a yellow border, with a reproduction of the mural. It's $7.95. The round Tim Gagnon patch is $11.95. Add $8.00 for US shipping. |

I also emailed the gift shop to ask if they were selling them. They are selling in the store but not online. I bought three of them and sent a check. The poster is 12 in x 18 in. | |
