Biloxi, Mississippi dedicated a new statue and art installation for hometown hero Fred Haise on Sunday (Feb. 13, 2022).
The storied Apollo 13 astronaut, who turned 88 in November, joined Mayor Andrew "FoFo" Gilich and sculptor Mary Ott Tremmel Davidson to unveil the bronze likeness of a smiling Haise, garbed in his astronaut suit and cradling his space helmet.

The city's initiative to create the statue received major support from Mississippi Power and Visit Mississippi, and technical assistance from Seymour Engineering.

Artist Lucinda Perniciaro L'Enfant has also converted a waterfront promenade into her interpretation of the surface of the Moon, including Fra Mauro, the area where Apollo 13 was scheduled to land. The Moonwalk also features the Apollo 13 insignia and three informational kiosks that tell the story of Apollo 13, the Moon's impact on the Earth, and "a love letter" from Fred Haise to Biloxi.

A publicly accessible statue camera, the Fred cam, is in the works for inside the Biloxi Lighthouse, alongside the current Lighthouse traffic cam.

Congrats. It was a long time coming, and well deserved.

Road trip required! Well deserved. I like the use of the S-IC base.

A friend of mine sent me these as he was there:

The statue does not do Fred (or his suit) justice in my opinion.

The statue of Fred Haise is turning heads because the city of Biloxi put spikes on top of it last week in an effort to preserve it.
The statue is in an area where there are a lot of birds. Seagulls are known to frequently perch on top of the revered astronaut's head. Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Cecilia Dobbs-Walton said the spike can help to keep the birds away.

"This is just another method that the city is looking at," Dobbs-Walton said. She said the city tried other strategies to keep the birds off the statue in the past but none of them worked.

"The city doesn't want to harm any animals, but we just have to make sure that we take the best route to preserve the statue."
