A bronze statue of NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson was unveiled on Monday (Aug. 26), Women's Equality Day, outside of 1285 Avenue of the Americas in New York City as part of public artists Gillie and Marc Schattner's Statues for Equality.
Gillie and Marc's Statues for Equality aim to balance gender representation in public art, and honor women's contributions to society. Gender inequality is among the most critical issues facing the world today.
In New York City, less than 3% of statues are female. With so few statues in New York City depicting real women, the disparity in public art illustrates how serious this issue really is. After this launch the number of historical female sculptures in New York City will have risen from a mere 3 percent to over 9 percent!
The statue is accompanied by the exhibit of a portrait created by Gillie and Marc at City Point Brooklyn.
