Moonwalker Neil Armstrong to be featured on mural in downtown Cincinnati

A celebrated Brazilian street artist will paint a colorful mural of Neil Armstrong, honoring the late Apollo astronaut in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.

It could be described as one not-so-small-step for a public art project, one giant tribute for the first man to walk on the moon.

Eduardo Kobra, whose earlier kaleidoscope-themed works have covered buildings in New York City, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, as well as São Paulo, Brazil, was selected by ArtWorks in Cincinnati to create their largest mural to date. Kobra decided to honor Armstrong, who taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and was living in the city at the time of his death in August 2012.

That is cool. Indeed, Cincinnati should be proud. Too bad Neil isn't still with us to see it for himself.

For the past three nights (7 p.m. to 11 p.m.), artists who work in projection mapping and digital animation, mural paintings and lighted installations have been illuminating Cincinnati as part of the annual Blink celebration.

This year's sites included the Armstrong mural.

Honoring Neil Armstrong's impact on Cincinnati, this work takes viewers on a space journey. Projected onto Eduardo Kobra's "Armstrong" mural, it features Apollo 11 audio and recordings of the CSO performing Holst's "The Planets." With bright, saturated colors, the projection brings the mural to life, merging history with art and music, and celebrating Armstrong's legacy and the awe of space exploration.

Many thanks to Randy (cS: RMH) for finding this video of the animation:
