Click2Houston.com: Tavern Popular With Astronauts Catches Fire A restaurant and bar known as a longtime favorite hangout for astronauts caught fire early Friday. The blaze broke out near the roof of the Outpost Tavern, 18113 Kings Lyn at NASA Road One, shortly after 5 a.m. The owner said it happened near a neon sign that had been on the building for seven or eight years, so an electrical problem is suspected. The building was closed at the time of the fire. No one was injured. The red barn-like structure used to be a hangar at Ellington Field and was later moved to its current location. It has been around since the 1940s. The tavern was featured in several movies, including "Space Cowboys," "Rocketman" and "The Challenger." |

The red barn-like structure used to be a hangar at Ellington Field and was later moved to its current location. It has been around since the 1940s. Wrong, it began as a barracks building at Ellington Field. The building has an interesting evolution (history) with which I am intimately familiar. |

Can't wait for it to re-open so I can have my cheese burger with fried onions on top. umm. The article mentions smoke damage. I wonder if there was any water damage to the mostly paper space-related items on the walls since the fire was in the attic. |

Donations to rebuild the bar can be made at the Outpost or by mailing them to P.O. Box 391, League City, Texas, 77574. |

Drove by yesterday while running errands. Workmen were already repairing the roof. The damaged portion is the end closest to Egret Bay (El Camino) where the beer taps are and the extra beer is stored. About 1/5th of the roof was being repaired. |

Drove by just now and the roof is all repaired. The workmen we cleaning tools, etc. Not sure if the inside was as spiffied up as the outside. The Outpost is a few doors down from the Webster Fire Dept., which must have been a factor in whole business not going up in flames. A few years ago a retired JSC'er died, Bill Fisher. We had an after funeral trip to The Outpost. According to his family they were looking for a name for the business and Bill suggested the name of his sister's business (bar/food/not 100% sure) in Kansas City called The Outpost. |
