The original Apollo 8 crew consisted of (left to right) Frank Borman, Mike Collins and Bill Anders. They are seen here during a training session at MIT in June 1968. Several weeks later Collins was removed from the crew because he had to undergo surgery. He recovered in time for a seat on Apollo 11 and the rest is history. Collins died April 28 at age 90. |

Great photo. Hard to believe it's over a half century ago. Tempus fugit. |

Great picture. Michael Collins was going to fly on an epic moon flight one way or another (Apollo 8 or 11), he headed the creation of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and he wrote "Carrying the Fire," a remarkably well-written book.He may not have left a boot print on the lunar surface, but he certainly left his mark here on Earth. |

I imagine that it was around the time this picture was taken that Mike Collins began experiencing the effects that led to the diagnosis and neck surgery. |

Ok, so let’s play “what if”. Collins flies 8 and there is no back surgery. Does he resign soon afterward, or does he go on to backup 11 (Lovell Collins Haise) or does he get command of his own backup crew, say Apollo 13, putting him in line to command 16? |
