Good one! 30 plus years since 51-L and this is the first time I have ever seen this photo. |

Nice photo from the archives. The only other pre-Jarvis crew photo I have seen is the one where they have polos, shorts, sneakers-and caps with mortarboards. |

Always surprises me what gems come of the space shuttle era.I remember reading somewhere that Jarvis showed up for the 61C crew photo and that's when he learned he would be bumped. So when was the 61C crew portrait taken, when was this taken, and when did Jarvis get added to the crew and a new crew photo taken? |

I have seen video from the 51-L preflight training where they were taking the crew photo with Jarvis and Barbra Morgan was there there too in the inflight clothing. Wonder how many different photos were done. This was the first and only(?) shuttle crew photo to use a red background. |

There were a couple (STS-35) but they were alternate portraits in casual clothing, not the released versions. The ACES suits would have been a clashing contrast so I guess red backgrounds ruled that out. |

It's my belief, looking at NASA photo numbers, that there are at least two crew photo poses taken: one in casual wear (flightsuits or business wear and military uniforms) and one in L/ES. |

Just about every crew as far as I can tell also has a comical or gag crew photo, but I doubt these were assigned NASA photo number. If someone were to make a coffee table book of these from Mercury up to today I bet it would be the best selling space book of the year. |

I don't understand why they're not wearing their mission patches for a formal photo. |

The STS-51L mission patch was still being finalized when the photo was taken. Christa McAuliffe was named to the crew on July 19, 1985, three days before artist Ernie Reyes began to design the crew patch. Greg Jarvis was added to the crew in October 1985. There was never a McAuliffe-only tabbed version of the patch, and this photo was taken before Jarvis joined the mission, so the STS-51L patch was still to come. |
