Another example of the "gag" portraits which surface every now and then and which I love so much. This is NASA's second group of astronauts, the New Nine, selected in September of 1962. They pose around a model of the Gemini spacecraft in the "official" portrait and a less serious version. Clockwise from lower left are: Jim Lovell, Elliot See, Ed White, Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, John Young, Tom Stafford, Pete Conrad and Jim McDivitt. Ed Hengeveld |

Looks like Elliot See didn't want to play along with the gag; he looks normal. |

If one could look into the future on the day the photos were taken, and told the nine that only three of them would walk on the moon, no one would have believed you. Another wonderful photo Ed. Keep them coming. |

Looks like Neil Armstrong has his mouth often, as if he is waiting for some rain to drop into his mouth! LOL |

Both these photos don't have a number. I purchased scans from a website that sells photos from the Ed White estate (and other celebrities). |

Great photos, Ed. They even turned the Gemini to the side for the gag shot. As for Photo ID...I have the original photo (on the left) in black and white, and the photo # is: 63-Astro Train-254 (release date was Sept. 17, 1963)

Thanks Tom, I have that one too. That is a number that is issued by NASA Headquarters in Washington. The color version is probably a transparency with a different number. |

That's right, Ed. It was released from NASA Headquarters in Washington...thanks. |

Since Neil is looking up he is probably thinking, "What?! They want me to go up there??!!!" Or perhaps, "The moon! Impossible!!" By the way, I think See raised his eyebrows in an attempt to have "saucer" eyes, but he still looks serious. In fact, it appears he never moved an inch from his pose for the official portrait. Great find Ed; thanks for posting it. |

Actually, Frank Borman is reaching around the spacecraft model to pull out some of Neil's hair... apparently you can get a good price for it at auction! |

I also like the way the Gemini capsule model decided to close it's hatches and look away from the camera... What a cut-up!

Great photo (and this comes from an unmanned spaceflight adept). Anyway, where would this Gemini scale model be nowadays? |

That model may have been the same one I saw at JSC in mid-1992 before Space Center Houston opened. There was at least a similar model painted to match the actual Gemini spacecraft inside Building 2 in the upstairs section located behind the auditorium. It was displayed near the Gemini 7 logbooks. One could view the Faith 7 and Gemini 5 spacecraft hanging from the ceiling at about eye level from the upstairs section. There were also many photos on the walls and various models up there. I believe Shepard's Freedom 7 spacesuit was also displayed in this area. I don't know what happened to the models, photos, and GT-7 logbooks; perhaps they are still there. Here are a few photos from that tour. |
