The new, quick-opening hatch for the Apollo command module was a direct result of the Apollo-1 fire. Here the hatches for spacecraft 102, 020 and 2TV-1 are seen in the assembly area at North American Aviation in October 1967. Spacecraft 102 was used for various ground tests, spacecraft 020 flew on Apollo-6 and 2TV-1 was used for a seven-day manned vacuum chamber test in June 1968, involving astronauts Kerwin, Brand and Engle.

Ed,

Are those hatches in the order you listed from top to bottom or near to far or what?

Is it just me, or is it rather strange that there's an adjustable wrench by that guy? I mean, given the nature of the hardware, you wouldn't want to risk stripping or even damaging a bolt, so wouldn't they have provided individual wrenches in the relevant sizes? Were things different in the sixties? Today, I wouldn't use an adjustable wrench on my car...
