Can someone explain the difference between the titles Project Constellation and Project Orion? Thanks.

To the best of my understanding, Constellation is meant to be the umbrella program under which Orion, Ares, etc. fall under. The intention appears to be that like Apollo, when Apollo Command Modules launched the crew, so will Orion and Orion Command Modules (the vehicles now-but-soon-to-be-formerly known as Crew Exploration Vehicles). At the same time, Constellation might be overseeing/ planning/ drafting other projects... |

"(the vehicles now-but-soon-to-be-formerly known as Crew Exploration Vehicles)" Ha!! I love sentences like this. Reminds me of the bit from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy about the difficulties of time traveler grammar. Mikie |

Scott-Also the vehicle(s) which will take humans to Mars might be derived from Orion CSM /LM's but they will be a generation newer and with enough upgrades to be named something else. Looking forward to the launch of Orion 1. Tim |

Was Orion the name of the nuclear spacecraft program from the 50-60's, I may be mistaken |

Orion was also the name from the 60's German tv show called "Raumpatrouille Orion," which was a classic. |

Indeed. Not just nuclear powered, but atomic bomb powered. Freemon Dyson worked on it at General Atomics in San Diego and his son wrote an interesting book on the subject. Although if you want a good feel for what could have been, the space battle in the last 100 pages of Niven and Pournelle's "Footfall" - in which an Orion spacecraft (with the four orbiters strapped to its side as secondary craft) goes after the alien badguys. Very cool. |

Thanks, I have seen the book many times at the bookstore and it is on my list to read. Do you know of any websites that may have additional info on the Orion spacecraft project, I will try google |

I don't know where NASA got Orion from but they published a book entitled: PROJECT ORION: A Design Study of a System for Detecting Extrasolar Planets. it's available at: http://history.nasa.gov/SP-436/sp436.htm And no, I'm not mentionning this because I've placed it online! I was just wondering if there was any relationship... Chris. [This message has been edited by collectSPACE Admin (edited July 26, 2006).] |

Wouldn't they still be known as Orion CEVs, rather than Orion CMs? Or have I got that wrong?(Personally I would much rather still have CMs and LMs, but then, I don't have much pull at NASA...)

Perhaps, but both the federal trademark filing and the information I received from sources close to NASA both specifically used the term "command module" when describing the use of name Orion. |

For the benefit of younger readers, "Orion" was also the name of the Apollo 16 lunar module which took John Young and Charlie Duke to the Moon in April, 1972. I wonder what they think of the name..... |

I had considered that, but to stay consistent with other forums (such as Mercury - Gemini - Apollo), I decided to go with the project name. |
