Lorna Onizuka, the wife of STS-51C and STS-51L astronaut Ellison Onizuka, co-founder of the Challenger Center for Space Education and a consultant to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has died. Per a public note posted on social media by her children: On July 27th [2024], 7 days past her 75th Birthday, our mom, Lorna Onizuka passed away. She was surrounded by Family. She had a rough go in the last few years, but as always, she faced it like a true warrior. She always pushed forward and tried to get the most out of life. By virtue of her tenacity, she was able to move those around her towards excellence in all they did. Her example shown bright for those willing to follow. She always had a kind word for you. She always had a shoulder for those who needed one. She would always listen and talk when needed. She excitedly supported the Astros and enjoyed animated texting sessions regarding their progress, or lack thereof. For those of us in the know, despite the constant reminder of death, she gripped her cane and persevered up until the end. Lorna carved a path of her own in a very competitive field. She truly was a leader and innovator in Space Exploration. She knew how to motivate some of the most brilliant minds leading them towards discoveries previously unknown. Being larger than life on her own merit, her shine illuminated that of her spouse even more. She raised her children throughout her journey, and provided the best guidance she could to her grandchildren. Lorna persevered through countless trials and tribulations. She faced darkness like few have ever seen. Every year, reminders of loss would scream from every source of information available. While comforted by acts of those around her, the yearly reminder was ever present. Every year, the emotions would erupt as if fresh and new. Every year, with poise and confidence, Lorna would plow through these emotional mine fields with elegance and grace. The portrait of true leadership and understanding constantly displayed. The leader of a family, the leader of coworkers and the leader among peers. She was an ever-present inspiration for those around her. One can only attempt to fathom, the constant pressure left by a spouse’s absence. Some might shrink in the aura left by accolades surrounding a lost husband who achieved so much for so many. Lorna not only stood alongside that aura, but she also carved forward creating her own. She truly did blaze a self-made path throughout her journey. Everyone who had a chance to share time and space with her was truly blessed through that opportunity. She was and still is a bright shining star amongst those of us left behind. On behalf of our family, we would like to request some time of privacy to process the loss. Once the magnitude of this loss has been faced, a memorial in Houston will be scheduled followed by transport and interment in Hawaii. This information will be made public once our family is ready. We hope for understanding as we move forward during the immediate impact of all our loss. Challenger Center statement Challenger Center Mourns Passing of Founding Family Director Lorna OnizukaIt is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Lorna Onizuka, a founding family member of Challenger Center and the widow of Ellison Onizuka, Mission Specialist of Challenger STS-51L. Lorna's unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, alongside the other families of the Challenger crew, played a crucial role in establishing Challenger Center as the lasting tribute to their loved ones. Founding Chair June Scobee Rodgers reflected on Lorna's profound impact: "We're so very sad to lose our friend Lorna. She will be missed dearly. She had a marvelous sense of humor and possessed the rare gift of bringing light and levity to tense and sad situations—a quality we often needed, particularly during the early years of Challenger Center. We will forever cherish the many years of friendship we shared. On behalf of Challenger Center, we send all our love and prayers to her wonderful children Janelle and Darien." Lorna's leadership and passion have been invaluable to Challenger Center since its inception in 1986. Her contributions helped shape our mission and vision over the past 38 years, leaving a legacy of exploration and inspiration. We will be forever indebted to her for her ongoing support. Our hearts go out to Lorna's children, her extended family, and her many friends during this difficult time. |
