This is sad news indeed. First and foremost on a personal level, for his family and friends. But this is also a loss to the space community in general. There was always something magical about Apollo 8, in its historical significance and its crew, even more so because for so long they were still complete as a crew, and as married couples. Frank Borman played such an important role in getting Apollo back on track after Apollo 1 and he will always be remembered as the first Apollo commander to reach the moon. I was secretly hoping for the Apollo 8 crew to be present at the launch of Artemis 2. Alas. May he rest in peace. |

From the book/movie, "The Bridges at Toko-ri", the aircraft carrier's commanding officer, in referring to his brave aviators lost during a successful bombing raid on the North Korean bridges, stated: "Where do we get such men?" That certainly pertains to Frank Borman, and also Ken Mattingly. RIP, heroes. |
