Oldřich Pelčák, who as a citizen of Czechoslovakia (today Czechia or the Czech Republic) was one of the first two people to train to fly to space who were not Russian or American, died on Saturday (Oct. 7). He was 79. In 1976, Pelčák was selected to backup fellow Czech cosmonaut Vladimír Remek for the Soyuz 28 mission to the Salyut 6 space station. |

I´d like to add a small correction - former Czechoslovakia split in 1993 into two countries, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. Both late Mr. Pelčák and Mr. Remek were representatives of our that time common country and made us all proud to be the third country in the world to send its citizen in space. Rest in Peace, Mr. Pelčák |

A person whom we loved very much here in the Czech Republic has died. Mr. Pelčák was very kind and friendly to everyone who approached him. His human approach to the public will never be forgotten. We will remember him forever. |
