I never met him but I have watched many interviews with him that are posted to the internet and he clearly was a very intelligent and thoughtful man. I read his book The All American Boys in the early 1980s and to this day still feel it is one of the best (if not the best) of all the astronaut books. I may not have agreed with some of his political positions but he had earned my respect. My condolences to his family. |

I first met Walt Cunningham in Northampton, England, in 2000 at the first of the Autographica events. He attended with Dick Gordon, Ed Mitchell and Al Bean. This, for UK space enthusiasts, was an unprecedented opportunity to meet four Apollo astronauts at one event.I well remember that the queues to meet Moonwalkers Bean and Mitchell and lunar orbiter Gordon were very long. Not so Walt Cunningham, who had "only" test-flown the Apollo spacecraft in Earth orbit. I made a point of speaking to him first and had a long and fascinating conversation with him. Ad astra, Walt. |

I had the immense honour of hosting Walt and Dot for dinner at my house back in 2005. They were on a very short visit to New Zealand and fellow CSer Craig organised the dinner. To be honest the whole evening is a bit of a blur, but I remember Walt wandering over to me as I tended the BBQ and us sharing a quiet few minutes of conversation. I can't recall what we spoke about, but I do think of it as a very special time for me. RIP Walt. Condolences to Dot and family. |

Very sad news as yet another of our space pioneers passes. I had the privilege of meeting Walt Cunningham three times and he was always friendly and not afraid to give his opinions. His autobiography is sensational reading. Also met his wife in Walsall who was very interesting too. My condolences to her and the family. RIP. |

I met Walt a few times briefly but I'll always remember Spacefest 2015. It was the end of the day and I approached Walt at his stand. We spent several minutes discussing his book before he autographed a photo for me. At this point he said his card services weren't working anymore, I told him I'd get cash and was told 'don't worry kid, it's on me.' What a gent, and a true character. He was a gentleman. |

collectSPACE Fellow astronauts remember Walt Cunningham as friend and mentorJudging just by the astronauts who came together to remember Walt Cunningham on Tuesday (Jan. 24), the late Apollo 7 pilot's reach extended far beyond his 1968 launch into space. The group, who took part in a panel discussion before a more traditional funeral service at Houston First Baptist Church, included two of Cunningham's fellow Apollo colleagues and four NASA veterans who flew on the space shuttle and International Space Station — the latter well after Cunningham had retired. All of them said they were grateful for Cunningham' friendship. |
