Got to meet Valery Vladimirovich on a few occasions, IMBP, VDNKh and Hovanskaya. a gregarious man, who was rightfully, extremely proud of his long duration mission. He knew it was going to be hard to beat. He was kind enough to help us meet many of the unflown doctor cosmonauts. He was lucky to make two long duration missions when so many of the IMBP selections never flew. Probably positioned himself well politically, for the first flight. Condolences to his family. |

I can recall the honour of meeting Valery Polyakov during his visit to the UK to attend the 3rd Autographica Show in Northampton between 17 and 19 May 2002 and again during his presentation at the British Interplanetary Society in London on 22 May. Two events stand out from the Autographica show. The first was an unofficial conversation between my friend and Skylab 4 commander Jerry Carr and Polyakov. Through an interpreter, both discussed privately their experiences on Skylab and Mir clearly having a common link from their long-duration missions. The second was an informal evening meal, and a few bottles of grappa, at a local Italian restaurant in Northampton. It was an unforgettable experience to walk to the establishment and to sit at the dining table with such famous cosmonauts as Vladimir Shatalov, Andrian Nikolayev, Talgat Musabayev, and Valery Polyakov. The high points of these Autographica shows were of course the opportunity to meet famous astronauts and cosmonauts, but added to this was the privilege to engage in private discussions and enjoy meals away from the official functions.
