Don Lind was surely NASA's most patient (or perhaps frustrated) astronaut, having arrived in May, 1966, and having had to wait 19 years for his one and only flight (in the shuttle). I can't think of anyone who had to wait longer. |

Why did he chose not to fly back into space? |

Quoting his NASA oral history (via our article): I thought, "I am to the point in my life where if I'm ever going to shift into academia, I better do it now, or I will end up as a NASA manager for the rest of my life." |

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Don Lind and that of his lovely wife Kathleen a few weeks earlier.I first read of astronaut Don Lind in the late 1960s from magazine articles during the run-up to Apollo 11, learning more during the early 1970s and about his association with Skylab. It was not until the 1990s that I began a correspondence with him related to my research for Jerry Carr's biography and my books for Springer on Skylab and the Lost Apollo missions. I was fortunate to meet with Don and Kathleen on several occasions during their 2000 Mormon mission to the UK both in London and in the Midlands where I accompanied Don and Kathleen at several presentations Don gave to schools. I have very fond memories of visiting them at their residences in the capital and in Solihull and of the time they visited my parent's home in Birmingham. Don kindly provide unique insights into his career and assignments which were referred to in the compilation of not only the titles mentioned above but also later in the cooperative works with Colin Burgess covering the selection of the NASA scientist astronauts (Groups 4 and 6) and last original pilot selections (Groups 5 and 7). Don and Kathleen, a courteous, gentle, and kind couple, were a joy to be with. From my time spent with them, they gave the impression of a sense of peace and contentment with each other, their Church, family, and their life together. I am forever grateful to have met and known them both. |

I had the privilege of counting Don and his family as friends. R. I. P. |
