This is sad news. A titan of the Russian manned space program. One of the most influential and powerful ex-cosmonauts at NPO Energia. Much credit for helping design the Salyuts and Mir. Fundamental to the ISS to this day.Met him briefly a few times on my trips to Moscow and Star City. An enormous bear of a man. You wondered how he fit inside Soyuz and endured a cumulative year inside the equivalent of the Mir base block. But he said that as a former tank commander he was used to confined spaces. Condolences to Yelena Kondakova and his family. |
