Had the chance to meet Vladimir Alexandrovich on several occasions. Tough and brave, he was the cosmonaut's cosmonaut. Can't now imagine flying into space three times without a spacesuit. He did it for the pioneering space communist cause. Important achievements each one. Head of the Gagarin Training Center, he was revered and ever present with returning cosmonaut crews at the Kremlin. Also visited many countries promoting Soviet manned space flight with all the communist leaders of the time. The Interkosmos flights took place during his tenure. In retirement he spent more time with his family and wife Musa who was his greatest supporter. She passed away a few years ago. Amazing to see a cosmonaut of that era live into his nineties after the tough lifestyle they lived. RIP |

Its been a long time since I read it, but I seem to recall in Jim Oberg's "Red Star in Orbit" Shatalov came across as a force in helping the Soviet space program eliminate a lot of the ineptitude and inefficiencies of the post-Korolev era and become the program that would shatter records with the late 70's/early 80's Salyut missions and begin assembly of Mir. And it makes sense as he had a front-row seat as commander of two spaceflights that utterly failed at their objectives due to technical failures and watched four is his colleagues die on spaceflights within four years. He struck me as a champion of human spaceflight and I hope he is remembered as such. |
