Space journalist Jay Barbree died on Friday, May 14, 2021 in Florida. He was 87. From a 2018 NASA release: Jay Barbree, veteran NBC News correspondent and only member of the media to have witnessed every NASA crewed launch at Kennedy Space Center, from Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 mission in 1961, to the final liftoff (and landing) of Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-135 in 2011. Barbree retired from NBC News in 2017 in his 60th year with the network stationed at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy. |

Very sad to hear about Barbree's passing; let's not forget that he also provide the tragic news on Apollo-1, Challenger and Columbia... |

When I first came on the space scene here at Kennedy during the 1970's, veteran reporter Mary Bubb introduced me to Jay Barbree along with so many other aerospace journalists. I felt like I was in "space press heaven" it would seem and got to know and work with Jay on a few space memorabilia project requests. What a career he had: NBC radio and television reporter for more than six decades, covered every US manned spaceflight from 1961-2011, wrote 10 books mostly about space with many on the New York Times best seller list, and was one of the trailblazer-founders of the Cape Canaveral Press Club and one of the first members of The Missile, Space & Range Pioneers. His first "live" liftoff from the Cape was the maiden launch of Project Vanguard in Dec. 1957, however, the rocket exploded in a big ball of fire just after four feet off the pad. That was Jay's introduction to this new and crazy business of being a space reporter. Since then, he may have covered more than a thousand space shots. With Jay's passing, I do believe it's the end of a very special and unique generation of legendary pioneer space reporters here on the Cape since the 1950's. He was a big part of that later era for me as it was a privilege in getting to know and work with Jay. He will be greatly missed and my sincere condolences to Jo and his family. |
