This morning I learned (via this forum) the sad news of the passing of GEN Michael Collins. This afternoon, I got home from work to find this eBay purchase from last week waiting on my doorstep. Farewell and Godspeed to the man I liked to call "the Renaissance Astronaut." |

He will be missed. The National Air and Space Museum is mourning for his loss being its first director. We salute you and may you rest in peace. |

I attended the anniversary celebration of Apollo 11 in Huntsville in 1989 and it turned out that the Apollo 11 crew was staying at the same hotel. The morning after the event I was sitting in the hotel lobby with some folks and was pleasantly surprised when General Collins sat down. He was looking at the local paper with details of the prior evening’s anniversary events. He lowered the paper and with a smile said “There’s an article in here that says a Neil Armstrong autograph is worth $250. I’ve got to get some of those.” Godspeed General Collins. |

The phrase "national treasure" gets used quite a bit nowadays but in Michael Collins' case I feel it is quite appropriate.RIP |

Such sad news. The greatest astronaut author. Every book that other astronauts put out are always judged against "Carrying The Fire." Some are right there but none have been better. One of the astronauts I wish I could have met in person. |
