Was lucky enough to meet him at the IAC 2004 event in Vancouver, Canada. He was almost unrecognizable with a big white beard. I remember that there was a NASA panel and afterwards he asked them tough questions. I still found him approachable and friendly afterwards. I did get to see him at a couple of MIT space day events a few years later.Would have been interesting to see how things would have changed for him had he waited for a seat on the shuttle. Sad to learn of his passing. |

Let’s play histrionics for a moment. Of the XS-11, only seven flew (some multiple times, most notably Story Musgrave) but the last of those seven had their first flight by 51-F in mid 1985. Holmquest, O’Leary, Llewellyn and of course Chapman never flew in space. So if Chapman had stayed in around, it is not unreasonable to expect that he would have flown in that time frame and most likely on a Spacelab mission.Another historical curiosity is whether, had he stayed around, he would have been the first Australian-born astronaut in space or beaten by the other ex-Aussie Paul Scully-Power on 41-G in October 1984. By that time five of the seven astronauts from the XS-11 had made a first flight, but only one on a Spacelab mission (Parker on STS-9/Spacelab 1). But we’ll never know. |

Celestis, Inc. release NASA Astronaut to Fly on Enterprise Flight Into Deep SpaceCelestis is proud to announce that Philip Kenyon Chapman ScD will be the third NASA astronaut to fly with Celestis. His family will commemorate his life on board both the Celestis Enterprise Flight into deep space and the Celestis Aurora Flight into space with return to Earth. Born and raised in Australia, Dr. Chapman was selected by NASA in 1967 as its first foreign-born, American Scientist-Astronaut. |

Update from Celestis: Unfortunately today's (May 2) launch of the Aurora Flight did not succeed. Liftoff was delayed until approximately 10:45 a.m. and approximately 3 seconds after ignition the SpaceLoft XL rocket suffered an anomaly and was destroyed in flight. UP Aerospace personnel are safing the area around the site as there is undetonated ordnance to be dealt with. UP and Spaceport America will conduct a failure review before scheduling another mission — we do not currently know when the review will be complete. All participants aboard Aurora will be offered a complimentary reflight — per their contract with us — on our next Earth Rise mission, named Perseverance Flight. We're obviously disappointed but have confidence in the UP/Spaceport America team who have conducted nie previous successful missions for Celestis. As soon as we have additional verified information, we will share it with you. |

Update from Celestis: UP Aerospace reported today [May 3] that they have recovered the Celestis Aurora Flight payload intact. All 120 flight capsules are safely in the hands of launch personnel and will be returned to us awaiting our next flight as soon as UP and Spaceport America complete their investigation and any required fixes are implemented. |
