Asif Siddiqi reported that Pyotr Ivanovich Kolodin died on 4 February 2021. Probably the greatest cosmonaut never to fly into space. His most notable mission being Soyuz 11 where his crew was replaced at the last moment. Thus avoiding the crew return depressurization that killed the original back up crew. Kolodin was born in Novovasilyevka, Soviet Union (now in Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine). In 1959, he graduated from Military Academy of Engineering and Radio engineering with gold medal. Kolodin then became an engineer-officer in the Soviet Armed Forces until his selection as a cosmonaut. He was selected as a Soviet cosmonaut as part of the TsPK Group 2 in 1963. He entered cosmonaut training in January 1963 and completed training in January 1966. After completing his training, Kolodin served non-flight (backup) roles on the Voskhod 2, Soyuz 5, Soyuz 7, Soyuz 11, and Soyuz 12 spaceflights. He trained as a test engineer on the original Soyuz 11 crew, which was destined to dock with and live aboard Salyut 1 space station. However the entire crew was bumped when it was suspected that flight engineer Valeri Kubasov had contracted tuberculosis. The crew that replaced them perished during their mission when their capsule depressurized during preparations for re-entry. Kolodin was in the first visiting crew to Salyut 6 space station with Vladimir Dzhanibekov as a commander (future Soyuz 27). But after the unsuccessful docking of Soyuz 25, it was decided to include in the crews cosmonauts with the flight experience, so he was replaced by Oleg Makarov. Kolodin later worked as a flight controller until his retirement on 20 April 1983. He was married and had one son (source: Wikipedia). ![](http://www.collectspace.com/review/neildc/pyotr_kolodin01.jpg) |

The story is, Kolodin was in the launch blockhouse at Baikonur during Vostok-2, Aug 1961, when Titov radioed that the booster was showing a lot of vibration — and he sounded worried.Kolodin cracked, words to the effect that "a spirited horse always tries to throw the rider." Which may or may not have been relayed to Titov, but impressed the daylights out of Sergei Korolev, who told an associate, re Kolodin, "that's the kind of man we need in the cosmonaut team." A year later, Kolodin was one of the Strategic Rocket Forces engineers undergoing tests for the January 1963 group — turned out he was missing a thumb from a 1950 accident. Korolev personally appealed to the State Medical Commission to approve Kolodin. "I will build a special cockpit display if necessary." |

Here's another one: a journalist had a chat with Kolodin sometime after the Soyuz-11 tragedy saying, in effect, or toasting (this was Russia), "better to be here than in the Kremlin Wall," which is were the poor cosmonauts were interred.Kolodin supposedly said, "I'd rather be in the Kremlin Wall. I'm never going to fly." He had, according to several folks, gone to see chief designer Vasily Mishin the day he and the Leonov crew were moved aside for Dobrovolsky's, and been quite adamant about the mistake Mishin was making. (Kolodin and others thought that he, Volkov and Leonov should be the Soyuz-11 crew.) Kolodin knew he had gone too far, re Mishin, and while he was in the flow for a short-term Salyut-6 mission later, never got close to another flight. |

That's another great story Mike. Who can blame Kolodin for trying to persuade management to change their mind about his crew. Years later when there was an anniversary of the crews death, Kolodin was interviewed on a television program and cried recalling their loss and how it could have been his crew. |
