NASA has issued a new poster with the members of the Astronaut Office for 2020. It includes the 2017 astronaut class as well as the management astronauts still with the office. Conspicuously absent is Serena Aunon-Chancellor, as well as management astronaut Michael Gernhardt. Did they retire? Or is it an oversight? |

On LinkedIn, Serena Aunon-Chancellor lists herself as both still in NASA's hire and as a Clinical Associate Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center since October 2019. Perhaps she is on leave from the Astronaut Office. |

Per NASA public affairs: Serena and Mike are both management astronauts. The astronaut poster does include a few management astronauts, but only those who are still directly supporting the astronaut office. (So, for example, Pat Forrester, as chief astronaut, is included, but Bob Cabana, as KSC center director, is not.)Mike has actually been supporting the engineering directorate for quite a while. He wasn't on the last astronaut poster, either. Serena much more recently became what is called a "Special Government Employee" working with LSU Health Sciences Center. She does still have a few NASA activities that she's supporting, but the bulk of her time goes to her work at LSU. (They also pay the bulk of her salary.) Serena's entry has been moved to Management Astronauts on NASA's website. | |
