Cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, who flew six times to space, has resigned from Roscosmos' cosmonaut corps, according to the website of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. TASS reports: According to the Center, Malenchenko, 54, quit on September 6, 2016. During his career he made six space flights to have spent a total of 827 days in space, slightly less than Gennady Padalka’s 878 days in orbit. Also, he performed five spacewalks, which lasted a total of 30 hours. Malenchenko's six spaceflights included one Soyuz mission to Russia's Mir space station (TM-19), one NASA space shuttle mission (STS-106) and four long-duration stays on the International Space Station (Soyuz TMA-2/Expedition 7, Soyuz TMA-11/Expedition 16, Soyuz TMA-05M/Expedition 32/33 and Soyuz TMA-19M/Expedition 46/47). |

Guess the chances of a fifth expedition were slim to none? Any other cosmonauts have a chance at matching Ross and Chang-Diaz' seven space missions? |

His upcoming flight is his sixth. Any cosmonauts with six missions and could possibly make a seventh? |

The only cosmonauts with six flights were Malenchenko and Sergei Krikalev, and they are now both retired from the corps. |

Surprised to learn of Mr. Malenchenko's decision considering he wasn't too old to fly another mission.Additionally, the chance to become the first Russian to make 7 spaceflights would be another incentive, one would think. I suppose the fact that there are many unflown cosmonauts plus the Roscosmos announcement it will reduce Russian crewmembers on ISS from March 2017 must have been a factor. Unless he got world-weary? |

Yuri Malenchenko has been named the deputy chief of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. "Yuri Ivanovich has made a great contribution to the development of Russian cosmonautics. His exceptional experience guarantees the successful fulfillment of the tasks of the Centre for the preparation of Russian cosmonauts and foreign astronauts, as well as the fulfillment of international obligations under the ISS program, "- said the head of the Cosmonaut Training Center Yuri Lonchakov of the appointment of Yuri Malenchenko. |
