Very sad news. In many ways, Ed Mitchell seemed to be the most "human" Moonwalker. You could really sense the frustration he was feeling, and expressing, during the descent towards the Moon before the landing radar kicked in. And now there are only seven. |

To complete a large historic moon map with moonwalker signatures, I drove to Ed Mitchell's house (at his invitation!!!) in 2005 or so. Flew to Florida, then a rental car, a PT Cruiser.Forget the moon landing stuff, all Mr. Mitchell wanted to talk about when I arrived was that darn car. They were fairly new to the rental market then and he got a real kick out of it. A guy who walked on the moon. Just WOW. Safe journeys, Dr. Mitchell... |

Press release Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise to speak at memorial tribute service for Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar D. MitchellThe family of Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot for Apollo 14 and the sixth human to walk on the moon, today released information for the memorial tribute service to be held at 4pm on February 23, 2016 in West Palm Beach, FL. Dr. Mitchell died Feb. 4 at age 85. His death coincided with the 45th anniversary of his Apollo 14 flight, Jan. 31 – Feb. 9, 1971. Joining the family and other dignitaries to celebrate the life of Mitchell will be Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise, Jr. The two men were friends throughout their time in the space program and remained close since. The community will be treated to hearing from Captain Haise some personal thoughts and commentary on Dr. Mitchell's extraordinary life and accomplishments. Fred Haise is a former naval aviator, fighter pilot, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon, having flown as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13. He was to have been the sixth person to land and walk on the Moon, but the Apollo 13 mission was aborted before lunar landing. He went on to fly Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests in 1977 and retired from NASA in 1979. Ceremony details are as follows and are open to the public. The service will begin at 4pm on Tuesday, February 23 at Dreher Park, immediately adjacent [map] to the South Florida Science Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida. A reception with the family will follow the service from 5:30 to 7:00pm inside the Science Museum. [If planning to attend the reception, please RSVP.] Edgar Mitchell is survived by his daughters Karlyn Mitchell (Cary, NC) and Elizabeth Kendall (Rosedale, MD); his adopted children Kimberly Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL), Paul Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL) and Mary Beth Johnson (Ridgewood, NJ); nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews, including nephew Mitchell Harkins and niece Belinda Hardy. Edgar was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Adam B. Mitchell. |

Hundreds of Edgar Mitchell's family, friends and NASA colleagues honored him at a memorial service on Tuesday (Feb. 23), the Sun Sentinel reports. His daughter Karlyn Mitchell recalled childhood memories of time spent with her father -- watching westerns, playing catch with a baseball and skating on the ice rink her father made when they lived in Boston. She shared with the crowd gathered at West Palm Beach's Dreher Park a few of his favorite puns and remembered how much work he put into learning what his space missions would entail."He lived and breathed going to the moon," she said after her father entered into NASA's programs, adding it became more intense after he was selected for Apollo 14 in the 1960s. ...the memorial service ended with a NASA and Navy jet flyover. |

Mitchell remembered at West Palm Beach tributeEdgar Mitchell, Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 14 moon mission in early 1971, was fondly recalled by family members and friends at a memorial tribute in West Palm Beach at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Held in a large and temporary outdoor tent, the event was delayed for 45 minutes by a cloudburst, but the storm failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees, as numerous quotes by the astronaut (including his memorable opinion of politicians) were recounted by various relatives and acquaintances. Among the approximately 400 guests were Apollo 13 LMP Fred Haise, who was one of the speakers, and Jack Schmitt, Apollo 17 LMP. Also in attendance were Laura Shepard Churchley, daughter of Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard, and Allen Roosa, son of Apollo 14 Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, as well as Rick Armstrong, son of Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong. NASA officials as well as government officials, including former U.S .Representative Mark Foley, Florida Lt. Governor Caros Lopez-Cantera, and West Palm Beach mayor Jerri Muoio and other local offficeholders. The celebration of Mitchell's life concluded with a flyover of NASA and Navy jet aircraft in a Missing Man formation. A reception was held in the museum.
