cS contributor Tony Quine found this notice on behalf of the Parachute Association of South Africa reporting the death of Timothy Mace. It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing this morning of our beloved and revered friend, Tim Mace, after losing his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends....he is also a former astronaut, and received the Royal Aero Club silver medal in 1991 for his work as an astronaut on the UK-Soviet space programme, which included high altitude parachuting. Mace served as the Soyuz TM-12 backup to Helen Sharman as part of Project Juno in May 1991. He was also a candidate (but not selected) for the European Space Agency's 1992 and 1998 astronaut classes.Wikipedia notes he was married to the daughter of cosmonaut Vitali Zholobov and became the helicopter pilot for Nelson Mandela. |

He lived an interesting life but I don't think he really forgave Helen Sharman for getting the seat to Mir. He was the most "qualified" of the four finalists and I heard he believed Sharman only got the job because she was a woman!. |

This is tragic news. As a Brit abroad who has met most of the Brits who trained for space, I would have loved to have met him. Since he moved to South Africa not long after the Juno mission we never really had the chance to meet him and appreciate his contribution to that mission. One always thought there would be more time. He certainly appeared to live life to the full with his sky diving. But still too short a time. Deepest sympathy to his family. |

To add detail, Mace passed away on 14 September 2014, in the German city of Tutzing. He was married to Gerda-Maria Klostermann-Mace, a fellow skydiver.Condolences can be sent here. A tribute page has been set up on Facebook. An obit has been published in this weekend's Süddeutsche Zeitung: |
