In the below photo, Capt. PVH Weems is second from the right holding a book he'd written on space navigation. In 1928, he taught Charles Lindebergh how to navigate after he flew to Paris. I'm pretty sure it's Frank Borman is on the far right. In a Sept. 17, 1964 AIAA address, Weems mentioned that on July 17, 1964, he flew a lunar module (then called LEM) simulator at NASA in Houston. It's possible that this picture with Borman was taken then. Does anyone know who the other two people are or what uniforms they're wearing? |

Could the one on the far left be Deke? |

Second from the left looks like it could be Richard Gordon. Both are wearing what appear to be military uniforms. The one on the left is wearing a US Air Force uniform, with either a gold or silver oak leaf on the shoulder, meaning he's either a major (O-4) or lieutenant colonel (O-5). Deke Slayton was an Air Force major. Richard Gordon was a US Navy officer, and the one second from the left has what could be an oak leaf on his collar, which is where navy rank insignia was/is located. |

I can't help with the ID, but I can tell you the one on the left is not Deke Slayton — he was out of the USAF by the time of the photo. And second from left isn't Dick Gordon, either. |

Perhaps identifying the report or book they are obviously showcasing might help the ID of the people in the photo. |

I don't believe either of the men on the left are astronauts, and I am not certain that the man on the right is Borman. |

Thank you for your responses. I think that the book is what Weems used in 1961-2 to teach four navy ensigns about space navigation.Page 108 of Exploring the Solar System (Launius) states that NASA in 1961 called on Weems for assistance on navigational problems for Apollo. |

My first impression is that the man pictured on the far right is too tall to be Frank Borman. Just an observation... |

The book is Space Navigation Handbook NAVPERS 92988. It was created at the United States Naval Academy as a graduate-level introductory textbook for a 4-week class in Space Navigation piloted in July 1961. Captain P.V.H. Weems USN was recalled to active duty to give the class.I concur that none of the others in the photo are astronauts. The man second from left does not facially resemble Dick Gordon. The man first on right is too tall and his jowls/double chin suggest he is not Frank Borman. Just my opinion, so I could be wrong. |

Here are a few photos of Borman from that era and from similar angles.

This photo reminds me of my 1962 High School Yearbook - not one student in the entire book is looking at the camera. Also, in one of the many programs related to space on the Science Channel, Carl Sagan is shown in one segment and he does not face the camera in the entire segment. Can anyone identify the book that they are holding? |
