Does anyone know who the Astronaut Support Personnel (ASP) were for STS-1, STS-2, STS-3 and STS-4?? It would be neat to find out who strapped in the astronauts during the space shuttle's test flights. Thank you. |

The first three test flights utilized back-up crews. My guess would be that they were at the pad when the flight crew arrived. Not sure about STS-4.

Loren Shriver was in the white room to help the STS-1 crew board Columbia. |

- STS-81: Pam Melroy
- STS-85: Joe Tanner
- STS-87: Joe Tanner
- STS-93: Rick Linnehan

If memory serves, STS-1 launch support astronauts were Loren Shriver and Elison Onizuka. Post-landing support: Bo Bobko and John Creighton. |

Does that support astronaut go out to the pad with the crew during pre-launch? If so, this was Dan Brandenstein and the STS-30 astronauts back in 1989 preparing to board the AstroVan at the O&C Bldg. |

Dan Brandenstein accompanied the crew because he was Chief of the Astronaut Office at the time. The ASP is part of the closeout crew, working to configure the flight and middeck well before the crew arrives at the pad. |

These are the Astronaut Support Person/backup ASP assignments I have on file (with gaps) for all shuttle missions. Primarily through 2000, I obtained the information from Mission Support Assignments lists issued by FCOD or the Astronaut Office. I hope it helps. - 51-B: missing in my records, too
- STS-103: David Brown, Ross
- STS-98: Ross, Herrington, GC Johnson, Woodward, GH Johnson, Foreman, Poindexter
- STS-109: Sturckow, Foreman, GH Johnson, Poindexter, Archambault, Behnken, Hurley (Foreman lead on STS-109)
- STS-107: Melroy, Archambault, Behnken, Poindexter, Foreman, Hurley, Nespoli

Out of curiosity I was surprised to read that Neil Woodward, a member of the astronaut class of 1998, was a Cape Crusader. Due to Woodward's departure before ever flying a mission his NASA bio makes no mention. |
