Steve Nesbitt, who from December 1980 worked in the Public Affairs Office at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, retired yesterday from NASA.Nesbitt left the agency as a public affairs manager, having served in a number of management positions, including chief of the Public Services Branch, chief of the External Relations Branch, chief of the News and Media Support Branch and associate director of External Relations. From 1985 to 1988, he was NASA's chief commentator for its space shuttle missions. On Jan. 28, 1986, Nesbitt described the loss of space shuttle Challenger. Obviously a major malfunction. We have no downlink... We have a report from the Flight Dynamics Officer that the vehicle has exploded. Nesbitt returned to the PAO console in Mission Control for Discovery's STS-26 flight in 1988, providing commentary for the first return to flight mission.Nesbitt first reported to JSC in 1978 as a Presidential Management Intern, serving as a budget analyst supporting engineering, flight operations, and space and life sciences directorates. He wrote of his own departure: Retiring to spend time with family, build wooden boats and provide volunteer public relations support to non-profit organizations.  | |
