Andrew Chaikin has shared as a tribute the introduction he wrote for "Celebrating Apollo 11: The Artwork of Paul Calle." The great space artist Paul Calle died yesterday at age 82. As a NASA artist he documented the early space program with a rare mix of passion and precision. With works like the portrayal of the first space rendezvous shown above, Paul captured as no one else the excitement of that incredible time. I was fortunate to have known him and to have enjoyed his warmth, wit, and tremendous spirit. |

I'm sitting here looking at some of Paul's art on my office wall and remembering his kindness, his talent, and his wonderful smile. My condolences to Chris and his entire family. We have lost a giant, but his view of space lives on in his work and his family. |

I would like to note that Paul's obituary in the Stamford Advocate notes that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's honor may be made to Smile Train, a truly worthwhile organization. |

It's hard to imagine a more appropriate charity to honor Paul Calle's memory than The Smile Train; an organization that provides corrective cleft palate surgery to the children of developing nations. Paul Calle's art, his wonderful stories, and engaging personality has given us all a lifetime of smiles. It seems fitting that we too can bestow a lifetime of smiles to a child with a modest gift in Paul's honor. Paul would approve. |

Paul Calle was a National Treasure with exceptional talent and will surely be missed. His space art and western works are truly masterpieces and will live on forever.. |

Like many I have been a fan of Calle's work for many years. His body of work spans many categories. Such a loss of a great talent. Whether it be Apollo 11 crew suiting up, or a group of buck skin clad Mountain men standing around a camp fire, Paul Calle's skill never failed to captivate the viewer. The first limited edition print I ever bought was a copy of his western painting "When Trails Grow Cold" Brilliant work. I have never seen an artist that could do so much with a simple pen or pencil. The lines and flow of his quick 'suiting up' drawings show his brilliance and artistic skill. Such a sad loss of a great artist. |

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending time (and a few drinks!)with Paul and Chris at the first two Spacefests. You could not find a more genuine and friendly man. We have many of Paul's prints and have enjoyed them immensely. Our condolences to the Calle family. |
