It was one of the great delights of my life to have met Paul. I continue to be awed and inspired by his great work and his even greater kindness. To Chris and family, may your wonderful memories bring you solace in the days to come. |

.After purchasing 'Celebrating Apollo 11', I corresponded with his son Chris and mentioned that his grandchildren too are budding artists; so now the third generation of Calles can be counted on with wonderful artwork. With the loss of Bob McCall earlier this year, space history and philately has seen the passing of another of its chroniclers. My deepest condolences to Chris and the family. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul and helping out with loading up some of his stuff at the end of Spacefest 2009. He and Chris were great people. I was drawn to his painting of Saturn V flames at the moment of liftoff. The use of yellow and orange shades is about the closest thing to the actual color of rocket exhaust I've ever seen short of watching a shuttle launch. I knew then he had seen rocket flights up close and personal and hadn't just painted based on photos or film.I've seen some of Paul's other art since then and he captured quite well the feeling of space from his time period for those of us who were too young to remember. He will be missed, but at least we can still look at his legacy on canvas and in drawings. How many of us can say we left a legacy like that. Thank you Paul. Too bad I won't get a chance to catch up on old times at Spacefest 2011, but hopefully Chris will still be there so we can toast to Paul together. |

.I am devastated that Paul has lost his battle with malignant melanoma. Paul was a great artist who was a true "Eyewitness to History" as one of the original participants in the NASA art program. He was the only "civilian" present on July 16, 1969 as Neil, Buzz and Milke ate breakfast and were suited up to leave for the Moon. He was a fantastic story teller, whether speaking one-on-one or to an audience. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times and we compared memories of the Apollo 11 launch. Last year his long fight with melanoma became public with a newspaper article about a clinical trial with a novel anti-melanoma therapy to which he initially responded. He leaves a legacy of epic drawings and paintings, postage stamp designs, and a wonderful family. RIP. |

This was a true heart breaker. Paul was one of THE finest gentlemen to grace our planet, and we are a better world for it. So down to earth, so humble. I cherish the cowboy with arrows through his hat he drew for me at Spacefest. And talk about legacies, not only is Chris as talented, but also a true gentleman. I was also proud to see Chris's son's artwork that he proudly showed to Alan Bean. His art lives on, and his legacy through his son and family shall continue to live and shine on as well. RIP Paul. Chris, my heartfelt condolences. |

A truly wonderful, talented and gentle man, who has left behind a glorious, treasured legacy of his extraordinary artwork. I also met Paul for the first (and, sadly final) time at Spacefest last year, and it was an eminent pleasure to chat with him and his son Chris. It was only a few days ago that I voted for Chris's Apollo 11 stamp as the one that most embodies the history and can-do spirit of America, and now I have learned of his father's passing. I hope his stamp goes on to win that accolade, as it deserves. My condolences go to Chris and the entire family network. We will miss you a lot, Paul.Colin |

Paul is honored with a long obituary in the New York Times. The obituary ends: Interviewed after the moon landing, Mr. Calle divulged the secret of his rigorous craft: "When you do a stamp," he said, "think big, but draw small." |
