Apollo EECOM Sy Liebergot passed along the news: We lost Apollo GNC Buck Willoughby on September 8, 2009 to Alzheimer's disease. Buck was sitting to my right at the GNC console when the O2 tank blew on Apollo 13. A cool customer, for sure. Briggs N. "Buck" Willoughby, Maj. USMC (Ret), 1934-2009Willoughby's early years were spent in Colorado. He left to join the Navy where he quickly rose to become a Marine Corps officer and pilot by the age of 21. Following his active duty career, he received a degree in Engineering from the University of Colorado. Upon graduation he went to work for NASA as a mission controller for the Apollo program and was integral in the success of the moon landings. Willoughby and his family later moved to Alaska where he had a successful career with the FAA. A moment of silence can be signified by an entry with no words and only a period. |

I was the assigned greeter for him and his wife during the Apollo 13 Gala at the Museum of Flight in Seattle a couple years ago. His wife and son represented him at the Apollo 11 event this summer.. |

Not only a "space hero" but a veteran too! I always thought the "space geeks" were civilians... never imagined that they had a "previous life" keeping me free. Thank you for both careers! . |
