MOL astronaut and former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Robert T. Herres, passed away in San Antonio, TX on July 24, 2008. Gen. Herres was a true gentleman. My condolences to his wife and family. Robert Herres, left, poses as a member of the U.S. Air Force 1967 Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) astronaut class. To his right, Robert Lawrence, Donald Peterson and James Abrahamson. A moment of silence can be signified by an entry with no words and only a period. |

I was fortunate enough to meet General Herres when he attended the rededication of the Space Mirror in honor of his MOL classmate Robert Lawrence in 1997. He was a true gentleman and American Hero.My prayers for his family and friends. Tim |

One of MY true non-astronaut hero...I wrote to "these four guys" years ago, sent a cover for their naming that I made and postmarked in South Bend. Years later, one of my "penpals" told me he used to drive one of them to work in the Orlando area... and I send him the cover... they "four guys" had autographed it for me... and I thought that my friend in Orlando had a better home for my autographed cover than I did. * Gene Bella |

I had the good fortune of meeting General Herres when we opened the 1013th Combat Crew Training Squadron at Peterson AFB, Co. He was a great leader and inspiration to all of us Space Cadets. My condolences to his family. |

Very sorry to learn of his passing. Such a great shame that the MOL program never flew. |

Herres is mentioned in Michael Cassutt's "Deke" as the one MOL astronaut who apparently had no desire to transfer over to NASA's astronaut corps (as 7 of his colleagues did in late 1969). A true USAF man to the end! |
