This morning I was looking closely at that iconic photo of Buzz Aldrin on the moon with Armstrong and Eagle reflected in his visor and fantasizing about owning the small golf ball-sized rock beside his left boot. I then began to wonder if anyone had ever tried photoshopping the gold part of Aldrin's visor, flattening out that fish-eye effect, and coming up with a "regular" (albeit blurred and distant) image of Armstrong on the moon. It's way beyond my capabilities, but has anyone ever considered doing this to see what it looks like? I'd love to see it myself. |

Here's one I just knocked up, its very rough! The original photo of Buzz was about 4,000 pixels by 3,500 pixels, but when you crop out the section showing Neil its only about 350 pixels by 260 pixels, so not enough resolution to print. We would need a far more hi-res image to start with. |

See this page under the AS11-40-5903 section for links to a couple of versions, with some discussion that the blue earth is also visible in the visor. |

Mike, that's quite a remarkable effort. It's like seeing a new photo for the first time. It's a pity the photo is so fuzzy, but it is great to see this particular section of a famous shot blown up and stretched to almost regular proportions. Well done! |

Ideally, we would need the original shot of Buzz at about 20,000 pixels by 20,000 pixels scanned directly from the original transparency to get a good enough shot of Armstrong. Here is the image again, flipped to show how Buzz would have seen Armstrong: |

Quite amazing; Armstrong, Eagle, the Stars and Stripes, Aldrin's shadow and the Earth high in the background. Wow!! What a pity Aldrin didn't have a camera at the time to take this photo for real. |

If you zoom WAY in on AS11-40-5961, you get almost the same viewpoint (slightly different angle, and of course without Armstrong standing there), which allows you to imagine that Armstrong shot in hi-res.In fact if you were feeling adventurous, Mike, you could put a zoomed-in section of this photo next to your visor image, for comparison purposes here? See also this attempt and this attempt to make a flat image out of the curved visor reflection. |

Thanks for all your comments regarding the cropped visor shot.I have just put up a page about it on my website, along with the only other shots of Neil on the surface: Neil Armstrong Photos On The Moon. |

In his 2005 book "Moondust" Andrew Smith says (p100) that Neil Armstrong asked Buzz Aldrin to take a photo of him by the commemorative plaque "he had just unveiled" but Buzz Aldrin refused, saying he was too busy. The transcript reads: 109:53:40 Armstrong: (To Buzz) Ready for the camera? No, I'll get it.109:53:43 Aldrin: No, you take this TV on out. ...which I guess might be interpreted so, but I assume the reference to camera is about the deployment of the TV camera?Editor's note: Threads merged. |
