In Tom Stafford's autobiography he describes himself, Gene Cernan and John Young walking out after suiting up for Apollo 10. In the corridor is Gordon Cooper's secretary, Jamye Flowers, holding Snoopy. Stafford gives him a pat. Cernan tries to take Snoopy and Jamye with him! There is a photo of Stafford patting Snoopy. Does anyone know of a photo showing Gene Cernan trying to take Jamye and Snoopy with him? (And I wondered what became of secretaries like Jamye Flowers. Does anyone know?) |

If I had been Gene, I would have tried to take Jayne with me too. Thanks Ed. |

I assume these must then be pictures of Jayme on the signing report for Young's May 2005 Novaspace visit. |

I thought I might elaborate more on the Apollo secretaries. They are still in touch, and call themselves the GALs (Girls of Apollo Launches). Most still live near Houston. The GALs were assigned to one crew chief (in Jamye's case, Gordon Cooper) but were actually a secretarial pool, handling 8 to 10 or so Apollo astronauts. GALs also includes some ladies from the astronaut's office, and the Cape. And yes Mark, that's Jamye in the pink sweater. A book has been mentioned, as has a reunion. Undoubtedly they all have great tales to tell. |

Thanks for the replies to my original post! That would be a great book, Kim; I am sure they have some fascinating tales. Jamye sent me a really nice mail with some information behind the Snoopy photograph. I'm sure she won't mind me sharing it. It was a 'gotcha' planned for Gene Cernan by one of the training guys...that turned out to be a gotcha on me instead when Geno tried to get me in the elevator with them. Geno had been told at the last minute by the trainer that I had a 'little' something I wanted him to take with him and he told them to get it to him and he'd slip in the side leg pocket of the suit. When I was given the Snoopy to hold and was standing in the door of the crew quarters I was purposely keeping out of camera range as the crew came down the hall from suiting up. At the last moment, I was unexpectedly pushed out into the hall and the first picture was taken with Stafford patting his nose. The gotcha on Geno was the large Snoopy was intended to be the 'little' item I wanted him to take... but Geno pulled a better gotcha... he tried to take me and Snoopy with him. The sequence photos show my genuine surprise when he grabbed me. They were on the elevator before I realized it was all recorded. The footage appears in the NASA Apollo 10 Mission film. The Snoopy/Stafford photo did hit a lot of newspapers. My 15 minutes of fame. I'd love to know where that Snoopy ended up. I don't remember seeing it again. So if anyone knows where that Snoopy went... |
