Today's Washington Post has the obituary (page B6) of Adm. Carl Seiberlich who commanded the USS Hornet for the recoveries of both Apollo 11 and Apollo 12. He died March 24 of coronary artery disease.Adm. Seiberlich spoke to a group of Space Unit members at the NAPEX stamp show in DC last year. A personable, fascinating man with some great stories of the recoveries, and a fascinating career in addition to the recoveries. He will be missed. .This is sad news. Of the very few recovery ship captains I tried to get autographs of, Seiberlich signed VERY fast and was most gracious. |

Had he to do it all over again he'd still be a Navy man, he says, recalling that when the Army came to him, they said, "Join the Army kid, and you get to eat out of your helmet; and the Navy came to me and said, join the Navy, kid, and you get to set at a table." "I told them, 'I'll be one of them!'" And for more than 40 rewarding years, he was. Officer. Gentleman. R.I.P. . |
