Dan Barry, who flew on three space shuttle missions including two flights to the International Space Station, has joined a 16-member crew for a different type of frontier mission. As is to be announced on CBS's "The Early Show" on Monday, Barry was named to the 12th season cast of the reality show "Survivor." Based in Panama, the aptly-titled "Survivor Panama: Exile Island" will debut on Thursday, February 2 at 8:00pm ET/PT. Like prior season's castaways, Barry will try to "outwit, outplay and outlast" the others for a $1 million top prize. Selected by NASA as an astronaut in March 1992, Barry was a crew member on STS-72/Endeavour, STS-96/Discovery, and STS-105/Discovery, logging over 734 hours in space, including four spacewalks. Barry retired from the astronaut corps in April 2005. |

I've never watched either, but may have to make an exception. So, from those who do, how would an astronaut do? Will the survival training help? Can they be mean enough? ------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

I am considering producing a special "Survivor Sighting" page that will track Barry's progress on the show and celebrate his successes. |

maybe do like Gary Hogeboom, former NFL quarterback did, until he was outed by another contestant. But I guarentee, unfortunately, more people would know Gary Hoegeboom (mediocre quarterback at best) than Dan Barry. |

Being a "Survivor" fan I do believe that the survival training will help him a great deal..as will the ability to think his way thru many of the challenges. Some of the people who have played in the past left quite a bit to be desired in the brains department. I can't wait!! Good Luck Dan!! |

This will be interesting to watch to see how he does. I think he will do pretty well given his training. I've never cared much for the show but I guess I'll be watching this one for at least as long as he survives. |

Sorry, won't catch my imagination. The biggest quality of "reality TV" is how separated from reality it really is. Good luck to Dan Barry, though. And to those who choose to watch, enjoy.------------------ Don |

Robert - I like the idea of a dedicated page - that would preserve the enjoyment of the show for Survivor fans who don't live in the US and only see it months after initial broadcast in America. To give you an idea - in NZ we are seeing Survivor Guatemala for the first time and Gary is still a current player... (and yes, the player I have a bet on is also still in, but no assistance please as I have a gentleman's agreement with a colleague that neither of us will use spolier information to create an unfair advantage). Cheers! Craig |

Just an FYI to the postings.... I am a Manager at JSC. Specifically, I managed Dan during one of his STS missions. The survival training that the ASCANS (Astronaut Candidates) go through is minimal. There is nothing that Dan experienced in Pensacola (survival school) that will help him significantly in Panama. It will be Dan's great people skills and personality that will contribute the most!
