Topic: Which Astronaut Was Most Gentlemanly?

I've read Scott Carpenter's oral history along with others. Everything I've ever heard about Jim Lovell is extrordinarily positive, and John Glenn is extremely well thought of by those who knew him, including some astro kids.So are these three men in a dead heat? Are there other astronauts who are thourogh-going class acts in this league? Are there any NASA "peer ratings" on this score? |

Wow, that would be an amazingly tough call. With very few exceptions, all of the astronauts I've met, from Mercury through the current ASCANs have been true class acts, amazingly friendly, and just great folks. Picking the top one, or even the top dozen, would be nigh impossible.------------------

I was fortunate enough to meet those three and they were very kind and approachable. Lovell even laughed (as though it was an insult) when I met him and mistakenly said, "Hi Astronaut Borman" (I guess I was nervous and had Borman-Anders-Lovell in my head). But he didn't laugh as hard as Fred Haise (add to the list), who was standing next to him. I would also add Gordon Cooper. But you're right - there's lots of nice ones.

How about my personal favorites, Charlie Duke, Jack Lousma, Dick Gordon, Pete Conrad, Ed McCandless, Gene Cernan, Paul Weitz and Wally Schirra. Talk about a group that gives true meaning to the word class. I think the list of these incredible gentlemen could go on & on from the M-G-A, Skylab and STS astros, with the rare exception of who's not happy to meet space fans. |

What about Fred Haise & Al Worden?. Lets be honest, all these guys are gentlemen to a "T". None of them are unpleasant in person unless they are pestered by "certain" over-zealous autograph seekers.Regards, Derek |

Derek has hit the nail on the head. All of these guys are extremely gracious. What we see in them is an example of a generation, where manners counted. Manners like theirs really stand out in a society where the Id has taken over the pop culture. As my pastor said in a sermon last summer, if you want a good example of the loss of graciousness, take a drive on the 405 freeway from Santa Monica to Huntington Beach sometime.
