Jeffrey Roth has agreed to show his epic documentary The Wonder of it All at Spacefest III once again as he did at the very first Spacefest in 2007.The difference is we'll do it in the Big Talks room, for only one showing, at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The first time, the room only held 100, so we had to do multiple shows. The Big Talks room is equipped with enhanced audio and visual. Director Jeffrey Roth will be available for Q&A after the presentation. This film has been a surprise hit with audiences at film festivals worldwide, and has won numerous awards. It focuses on the astronauts, and how the Apollo experience changed them, rather than mission accomplishments. You MUST experience the Saturn V liftoff.' To buy advanced tickets or a package, go to Paypal.com and click on send money tab. Enter cindyban@roadrunner.com and then the appropriate amount. - $10- 1 movie ticket
- $45- 1 movie ticket with signed Edgar Mitchell & Film Director 1st edition 18x24 movie poster
- $50- 1 movie ticket with signed Edgar Mitchell & Film Director- The Wonder of it All DVD
- $90- 1 movie ticket with signed poster and DVD
Tickets will also be available at Jeff's booth, #20, in the Arizona ballroom, and at the door. Patrons are encouraged to observe the Heritage Auction taking place in the same area after the show. |

A friend and cS member was going to bring a small model to be signed by General Stafford (and possibly Captain Cernan). It looks like he might not be able to attend Spacefest. (My friend, not the general.) If anyone by any chance thinks they might be able to help me out, please e-mail me. If you live in the Virginia-DC-Maryland area, perhaps I could give it to you this Wednesday at Udvar-Hazy, if you can be my guest at a dinner there before a lecture by Gene Cernan. I have an extra ticket. Please see this post for details. The model is not delicate, so you could just put it in your suitcase with your clothes. |

And now another Icelandic volcano has erupted. Forecasts show it affecting mostly Iceland and Greenland but it could affect transatlantic flights. |

I plan to be going to Spacefest, and it would be fun to meet some of the other space junkies from this board. Please post a picture of yourself so that we all kind of know who to be looking for. Sunday morning, we will have 3 panel discussions. The first is an Apollo Q&A, and will feature Alan Bean, Edgar Mitchell, Al Worden, Dick Gordon and Jim Lovell. Andy Chaikin will moderate. Wow! |

I am not computer-savvy enough to post a picture here despite the instructions given. If one of my kids stops by the house between now and Spacefest I will post a pic. If not, I will certainly introduce myself if I spot you. Hopefully, other cSers will post their pics also. |

You need to film all of these wonderful moments and release an official Spacefest DVD. These moments are much too good to be forgotten in years to come. |

We can't film a talk or discussion in its entirety. There are rights issues. I wish we could; I doubt that I'll get to see much. |

I can't make it next week so there's a Tour 2 ticket available. Anyone know what Gene Cernan's completion fee is? |

Sorry you can't make it, Dave. The Tour is on Thursday, June 2. We must have all names in advance for approval by DM to visit the boneyard. In addition, everyone on the tour needs some sort of government issued photo-id; driver's license, military id, passport. Security is a bit tight! quote: Anyone know what Gene Cernan's completion fee is?
I'm not absolutely certain about this. On his last visit here it was $150. |

Friday Luncheon, June 3, with the astronauts is almost sold out. We have only 10 tickets left for seating with either Jack Lousma or Rick Searfoss. Don't wait until you get to Tucson to purchase. They may be all gone by then. |

I'm hoping a few early birds might be interested in coming to my Friday morning talk. I'll be presenting some of the material I have been researching for my next book.My topic is 'The Soviets' Last-Ditch, Hail-Mary Attempt to Beat Apollo 11'. On July 12, 1969, the Soviet Union launched a moon-bound spaceship. Chris Kraft did not appreciate their timing! The blast-off sent Kraft and Frank Borman on a snipe hunt to determine what in the heck the ship was, and how it might interfere with Apollo 11. I've got new interview material from Borman, Kraft, and two of the men whose creation got Kraft all worked up in the first place. Hope you can make it! |

I was just perusing the speakers and noticed that Geoff Notkin from the TV show "Meteorite Men" is no longer listed. What happened? I didn't see any posts about him cancelling. |

Like most other shows, we don't advertise cancellations. Geoff had to film his series overseas this week. So does Phil Plait, the "bad astronomer". |

Wishing to avoid the inevitable hold placed on my credit card at these signings - despite alerting the bank every time! - I was wondering if the astronauts will take personal checks. I know that Jack Lousma and Dick Gordon only take cash. |

How will payment work at Spacefest for signatures? Will customers be dealing individually with each astronaut or will there be an option to pre-pay at a central location and then proceed to the table or applicable booth to obtain the autographs? |

Scott, in the past it's been a credit card machine at each astronaut's table, with a volunteer helping to process the transactions. Even with posted fees, figuring out what will be charged is done "in the moment". An astronaut might decide not to charge one person for an inscription on a particular item, give someone a discount for multiple items, etc. Have multiple credit cards ready. The portable machines are finicky and slow. Also, let your bank know in advance that you will be making multiple payments to one vendor (Kim: will it come across as "Astronaut Central" in the bank billing?) in a very short period of time. That kind of activity usually triggers a fraud alert if you don't give them a heads-up. After the first hour of signing, you will see a large number of people standing off on the sidelines, frantically calling their banks to have holds taken off their credit cards! From experience, I can tell you that Jack Lousma and Dick Gordon only take cash. They were very kind to have let me run out to find an ATM after signing an item and pay them when I came back. |

You're welcome. Be sure to introduce yourselves. I'll have some interesting photos for signature with me, especially since Lovell, Haise and I will be together, again. Also I'll have copies of my autobiography and I may bring some Apollo 13 Mission Control baseball caps which I had custom made a while back. Needless to say, I invite y'all to my Apollo 13 talk. |

It is with regret that I have let Kim know that I will not be able to attend Spacefest.NASA's STS-134 and STS-135 milestone events (landing and rollout respectively) scheduled for this week have made it logistically very difficult to get to Tucson in time. I know Spacefest will be an amazing time for all involved and I am sorry I won't be there to take part in it all. |

I have some questions about etiquette. I have been to a few events with an astronaut speaking and signing autographs afterward, but never to a multi-day event like this, nor one where they were charging for autographs (this is NOT a complaint about that. There was enough of that on the Spacefest Facebook page!). I am going to be attending with my fifteen year old son. The kid has been mowing lawns all spring and summer to save money for autographs and memorabilia, but he's only come up with about $600. I'll be adding to that, and picking out something nice for his Christmas present later this year, too. We would like to make the most of this event and meet as many astronauts as we can. So the question... if we happen to catch an astronaut with no line, is it okay just to go up and introduce ourselves? Is it considered pushy to ask an astronaut to pose for a picture with the kid if he is not buying an autograph? If we are lucky enough to run into an astronaut in the elevator or hallway or whatever, is it okay to ask for a photo? I am not going to interrupt them at breakfast or anything like that, just wondering what the "norms" are at an event like this. I want the kid to have a positive experience -- and I want one as well! Thanks for all opinions and replies. |

You're a great Mom for taking your son to this. If they're not busy they'd generally be happy to chat, take pics etc. Most of them are extremely approachable. When you get there, look me up - I'll be running the floor and will be happy to steer you where you need to go. Al Hallonquist |

Historian Mom - To add what Al said, I would generally recommend visiting the autographs room in the afternoon if possible (unless there is a must-see astronaut who will only be around in the morning). When the doors open in the morning, the lines at the astronaut's tables tend to be the longest. Therefore, the available time to talk to the astronauts is limited. Once the lines have died down by the afternoon, you'll not only be less rushed for time, but the astronauts will be more available for photos and chatting. Most of these guys are happy to talk to enthusiastic children. Autographs are nice, but be sure to collect some good memories too! |

HistorianMom, Charlie Duke is wonderful with kids and is a near neighbor of ours, hailing from Louisiana. Richard Gordon is another one that I really like talking to. A moonwalker can make more giving a speech somewhere than they probably make here, so even for these guys this is about more than money.Surprisingly the lines die down fairly quickly so by lunch you can visit and talk away. I have only been to the previous Spacefest but was not turned down by a single astronaut for a photo. If you see a white bearded older guy walking around maybe accompanied by his beautiful 14 year-old daughter, say Hi! |

It did seem that way. The longest line today was when Dave Scott showed up, maybe 20 people had gathered for autographs. Most of the astronauts only had a few in line at any time. Not sure what Friday was like. |
